高村薫は仕事の描写を大切にする作家である。新聞記者たちのいったん事件が起きたときの独特の空気の描写やネタ元との付きあい方、大手企業社長の分刻みのスケジュールを適確にこなし判断していく様子、刑事たちの独特な仕事の内容、今回はとくに「行確」が執拗に描かれる。しかし、この作品の中でもっとも重要な役割を持った人間達の、その仕事内容がほとんど書かれていない。総会屋と政治家の仕事である。その事は何を意味するのだろうか。読者それぞれが考える事なのだろう。

長編の利点であるし、高村薫の小説の利点でもあるのだが、いろんな読み方が可能だろうと思う。社会的事件発生のメカニズムとその発生源への考察、大企業の危機管理のあり方、男たちの誇りのあり様とその失意のあり様、幾つかの隠れた愛の形。

ラスト前の簡単に触れられている事件後の半年の経緯。実はこれだけでも一冊の長編ができる内容があるのだが、高村薫は語らない。このあたり、スルメのように美味しい小説ではある。

ラストの数ページは最近の長編の中でも白眉であった。このラストだけは文庫版「全面改稿」でも変えて欲しく無い。

高村薫の本を読むときは、腰を据え、物語に没頭する覚悟で臨まなくてはならない。
深く暗い絶望感を持った人間達には、雑念を振り払って対峙しなくてはならない。

本書では警察官、大企業の重役、犯罪グループ、闇社会等、極めて個性的な人物達が登場する。
結末に向かう過程で悪夢は繰り返される。まさに絶望そのものだ。
これほど吐き気を感じる読後感は、後にも先にも経験がない。

とはいえ本書は傑作である。登場人物達の事件を巡る攻防は読み応え十分だ。
嫌悪感を与えながらも、ここにはリアルな人間が包み隠すことなく描かれている。ただ合田雄一郎はやさしく成り過ぎたか。

僕らは生きていく中で、好むと好まざるとに関わらず、社会的立場というものを得てしまう。
さらにその背負った立場ゆえの葛藤、呪縛にもがき苦しむ。その姿こそ本書の最大の魅力だと思う。

本書の題材が、1984年に世間を賑わせたグリコ・森永事件であることは明らかだ。この事件にまつわる様々な説が、物語りの中にちりばめられている。「日本はどうなってしまうのか」の一文は、絶望感に対する著者の強いメッセージである。本書はミステリー・社会派作家としての、著者の最高傑作である。

企業に勤めたことのある人間、
会社のしがらみを知っている人間であれば、
共感しながら、読める本です。

それでいて、企業という組織から離れれば、
人間っていうのは、本当はこうなんだよなぁ、
と思わされるストーリーです。

誰が正しいとか、誰が間違っているとか、
という視点でなく、人間が組織で生きていったときに
見えてくる弱点を読んでいくような本だと思います。

そして、人生も考えます。
