　文字を読むことに苦痛を感じ、ページをめくるが怖くて仕方がない。本を読んだあとも暗い感情が胸を渦巻き、この話について考えるのも辛い。友達に勧めようという気分にもならない。
　そういった面で、本書は読書のレベルを超越している作品だ。一部の要素がそうであるにしても、こんな本には二度と出会えないだろう。

どうしようもなく不快で、たまらなく陰惨で、めまいがするくらい救いがない。なのに止められない。止められないばかりか一度でもそれを味わうと、中毒患者のように彼の著作を求めずにはいられなくなる。ジャック・ケッチャムはそういう作家である。『隣の女の子』という題名から想像されるのは、思春期の男の子たちの偶像のような少女と、まだ幼さを残した少年との拙い、でもいつまでも輝きを失わない、懐かしいようなもどかしいような恋の話しだろう。だが、そうではない。『隣の家の少女』は、可愛らしいそのタイトル自体に悪意がこもっているかのような、惨たらしく、底冷えのする恐怖に満ちた小説だ。この本を手にしたわたしたちは主人公の少年とともに、その陰惨な世界に引き摺り込まれていき、そしてページをめくったら最後そこから逃れられなくなる。むごたらしくも魅惑的な世界。その世界では少年もわたしたちも皆、共犯者である。

アメリカの郊外、閉鎖された小コミュニティの中で起こる残酷な物語。新しく引っ越してきた少女に対する卑劣な暴力。日常が非日常に代わる様を、その事件に参加しながら、語り手である私は克明に記録する。日に日にエスカレートしていくその「遊び」は史上最低の結末を持って幕を閉じる。キングも絶賛する巷で噂の作家による傑作。一人ぼっちの部屋で読む事はお勧めできない。
