江戸川 乱歩
1894年生まれ。本名は平井太郎。1923年『二銭銅貨』でデビュー。探偵小説の第一人者として『屋根裏の散歩者』『陰獣』『蜘蛛男』などの代表作を次々と発表。1936年、初の少年向け読み物『怪人二十面相』が評判を呼び、明智小五郎と少年探偵団が活躍する「少年探偵」シリーズとして現在も読み継がれている。1965年没(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ポプラ文庫クラシック版少年探偵シリーズの続刊は、前回からは巻数が一気に飛んで、第２４巻だった『鉄塔王国の恐怖』を含む、順序としてはバラバラな状態で発売された。
「２６巻まで確実に出しますよ」との宣言なのかもしれない。
この『灰色の巨人』は、旧版では第１９巻であった。
ご覧の通り、本作のカバー絵は、少年探偵団シリーズではおなじみの柳瀬茂画伯の作品ではなく、武部本一郎画伯の作品である。
「にじの宝冠」をかぶった「サーカスの女王」は、火星のプリンセスのようでもあり、背後の「灰色の巨人」も、何だかスペースオペラの登場人物のようだ。
まさに、ひと目見て武部画伯の筆とわかる画風である。
そして少年探偵は、夢見るような眼差しの、すばらしい美少年として描かれている。
こうしたカバーは、こどもにとっては、内容への期待をいやがうえにも高めるものであった。
もっとも、その内容は、大人が読み返せば、明智小五郎対二十面相の定番的要素を寄せ集めたものに過ぎず、特に新味を感じさせるものではない。
むしろ、きらびやかな宝石、サーカス団の美少女、ルパンの奇岩城を連想させる怪盗の本拠地、空中への脱出劇等々、こどもが安心してひと時をすごせるワンダーランドであった世界を、素直に楽しみたい。

今回は、サーカスが舞台。なんで、サーカスって不気味なんだろう、乱歩の雰囲気がよく出ている。
このシリーズも、はじめは懐かしさで読んでいたが、続けて読むと、だんだんと引き込まれていく。子どもの頃は明智小五郎や少年探偵団の活躍に胸を躍らせていたが、大人になると、毎回、捕まる怪人二十面相を応援したくなる。なんでだろう？
