話題が発散してしまって、肝心の"へそ曲がり"の説明が納得できるところまでなされていない。ささいな材料をふくらませて本の形態にするのは、いかにも新書という出版物だと言えるのかも知れないが、この本はそろそろ限界に近いところにいると感じる。
モンティパイスンを描写するのに、裸のピアニストを強調して取り上げるだけでは、あまりにも目の付けどころが局所的だし、"へそ曲がり"の本質的なところから離れすぎているだろう。

著者の作品はインサイダーでなければ解読できないような不思議なイギリスへの貴重な羅針盤です。今回は、前回の「不機嫌なメリーポピンズ」に続いての作品です。今回は対象をさらにマニアックな対象に広げています。ここまで対象が広がると、もう普通の日本人にはまさに別世界です。もっともシェークスピアも取り上げられていますが、そのアプローチの焦点はその猥雑さと下品さの部分の役割の解明ということになっています。日本人には到底理解できないサヴォイオペラにもそれなりのスペースが割かれており、最後は「faulty towers」や「モンティパイソン」にまでその射程は広げられています。今回はミドルとローワーの間の断層はどちらかというと余り強調されることなく、イギリス人全体の共通項を取り上げることに、力点が置かれています。でも「意地の悪さ」はどちらかというとアッパーミドルに特異に見られる現象ではないでしょうか。ローワーは、階級差への異常なsensitivityと自己の歴史的な存在へのsense of insecurityの欠如（歴史のないアメリカは本質的に不安だらけの強烈な同調圧力を強いる社会です）を除くと、驚くべきほどアメリカ人にその趣味思考が酷似しているのは、元が同じだからでしょうか。。カントリーハウスという観点からのagatha christie（父親はアメリカ人！）の作品の分析は、逆説的ながら、なぜpoirot物以外の彼女の作品が、日本人には受けないのかの秘密を解明してくれています。さて、独断ながら、いくつかの注文をさせていただきますと、どうして著者は、eastendersを取り上げないのでしょうか？そしてあのclive jamesも取り上げられません。もっとも後者は、「周辺から中心へ、または直轄領(dominions)からの本国への影響」という観点から別の作品が構想されているのかもしれませんが。

イギリスの大衆文化から、
イギリス人のシシニズムや皮肉好き、
「へそ曲がり」ぶりを示した本。

題材としてあげられているのは、
「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック」、サヴォイ・オペラ、
シェイクスピア、アガサ・クリスティやウッドハウスの小説、
コメディなどです。

ひとつひとつは面白いのですが、
単なるイギリス文化紹介になってしまっている感じがあります。
イギリス好きのための軽い読み物としては、面白いです。
