スイスとイタリアという近くて大いに異なる２つの国を比較しながら、
イタリアで仕事をするときの何ともいえないもどかしさが書かれています。
トリノオリンピックという大舞台でさえもバスが来ない、
英語が通じない、ボランティアが助けてくれないなど、読むには面白く、
しかし実際に仕事をしている人にはやっていられない筆者の苛立ちが伝わってきます。
いろいろ不満もお持ちでしょうが、決して苛立ちをぶつけるような乱暴な書き方をしていないので、
とても好感が持て、楽しく読み進めることができました。

スイスで暮らしていた特派員によるイタリアの時事。
主なトピックスは、ヨハネ・パウロ２世の死去と新法王選出、
トリノオリンピック、ベルルスコーニ元首相など。

記者としてイタリアに赴き、仕事をした際に遭遇した
トラブルなどの裏話や、政治的お話、
イタリアとスイスとの比較文化など、独特の視点が興味ぶかかったです。
イタリアの政治的話題は、日本のニュースではあまり扱いが大きくないので
その意味でも興味深い本でした。

著者のスタンスはタイトルどおり、イタリアは好きだが
仕事で行くと、その手際の悪さ（なのになんとかなってしまうのだが）に
いらだたされる、というところです。
それでも仕事でもいいからイタリアに行きたいともあり、
そうとうイタリア好きのようです。
