外山 知徳
1942年、東京都生まれ。静岡県立静岡高等学校から武蔵工業大学建築学科を卒業後、東京大学大学院工学系研究科博士課程修了。工学博士、一級建築士。1971年に東京大学生産技術研究所助手、フムボルト財団奨学研究員として2年間ドイツに留学の後、アメリカのインディアナ大学で研究を重ね、1981年から静岡大学教育学部に赴任し、1987年から教授。住居学を講ずるかたわら、静岡家庭裁判所家事調停委員、静岡県インテリアコーディネーター協会顧問、静岡県住まいの文化賞審査委員長などを務める(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

著者は工学博士で一級建築士、なおかつ現在教育学部教授として｢住居学｣の教鞭をとられているという異能の持ち主である。昨今ニュースとして報じられる＜家庭内暴力＞＜ひきこもり＞などの精神病理に住まいがどのように関係しているかを研究されている。
本書はその研究結果に基づき、実際に相談を受けた実例をあげ、住まい方と子どもの自立について詳しく書かれている。
現在マイホームを建築中の私にとって、この内容はかなりショッキングであった。幸福なマイホームを作ることを夢見ていたが、家にこだわりすぎて、子ども部屋が出来たら、バリアフリーにしたら安心してしまう、そこに落とし穴があることに気づかない。
How-to本ではないからこそ、これで安心といった安易な答えは見つからないが、う〜んと唸りながら住まい方を考えるよいきっかけとなった。

5.0 out of 5 stars 再考−家族の絆（テリトリー形成力と絡めて）, 2008/11/30
　間取論はよくあれど、ここまで的確なものは少ないと思う。
単なる間取だけの問題とするのではなく、テリトリー形成と絡めて
いるので、間取が直接的な問題にならない場合もある。

　最近の傾向としては大きな家族団らんできるリビング・オープン
スタイル・個室、これだけを与えれば、全てを解決できるような建
築家の提案も多い。しかし、この著者は、単に容器を与えるのでは
なく、住み手の心を重視した家の使い方を提案している。だから、
立派な新しい住宅でなくても、大人が何も感じていなかったちょっ
とした家具の配置などで、子供たちが不登校から脱していったりす
る例を紹介してくれている。人間の心に部屋や家が全てではないが、
その一旦を担っている事がよくわかる。子供の成長にはテリトリー
形成力が深く関わっている事が解ってくると、間取り・住まい方の
重要性が解ってくる。

　最近、少年少女の犯罪が多いが、日本において、このような点を
考慮して、住宅づくり・都市づくりを行えば、解決していけるので
はなかろうか。
