一匹の猫「モン」が三者の人生に関わる。
「猫鳴り」とは聞き慣れないことばだが、はたして作中にそれに対する解釈があった。
この三人の胸に在る昏さは、信枝の場合「空っぽの底なし井戸」「虚無」と自覚し、
行雄は「ブラックホール」と呼ぶ。藤治は子供の頃から抱えている「死の恐怖」がそれだ。

どこからともなく現れて、捨てたはずのモンを飼うに至るまでの信枝と藤治夫妻の葛藤は
切羽つまったものだった。失ったものがあまりにも大きすぎて、現実を生きている
匂いがないような信枝の昏い心象に、モンが分け入ってくる。
行雄は彼らとは直接関係のない少年だが、自身の「ブラックホール」から脱出するまでの
行動や心理がなかなか粘っこい描写で、思春期の苛立ちを裏打ちしている。
モンは、同級生の元の猫として、効果的な役回りで登場する。

やはり、この作品の三篇のなかでも群をぬいて静謐で濃密な闇を描いているのは、
藤治の章だ。
老いた一人と一匹が、死にむかって生きてゆく。
もちろん、モンの体がきかなくなり衰えていくさまは、寂しさも虚しさも無念さも
ともなう。藤治にも医者にも、もう手立てがないところまでモンの症状は進む。
モンとともに生きる藤治は、モンから「死」というもののイメージを様々に
受けとる。世話をしているはずの藤治が、モンに別れの準備が整うのを待たせていると
自覚する場面がある。克明にそれを描く作者の眼。
「死」を、藤治はモンの老衰するばかりの日々を見つめながら、徐々に受けいれていくのだ。
老人と老猫の静かな余生。
この世に生まれ落ち、生きて、ただ生きて、死んでゆく。それは、猫も人間も同じこと。
尊く潔いまでの、モンの寡黙な姿に、どうしようもなく胸を突き上げられた。

モンの死を受けとめる藤治の葛藤を描ききり、生きて死ぬことの自明の理を
藤治も私も受けいれられたのである。

沼田まほかるの3作目の作品です。
前二作では緻密な筋立てで人間の情念の色を鮮やかに描いた沼田氏ですが，本作ではさらにストーリーテリングから人間描写へと舵をとりました。
1匹のかわいくない風貌をした猫をめぐる中篇3編がおさめられています。
子猫のときからヒキガエルのようで，大きくなっては大きくなりすぎて「猫ですか？」と尋ねられる猫「モン」。
モンの周りの人間はいろいろな闇を抱えています。
闇に光をモンがもたらすわけではありません。
ただ一番暗いところをほの暗さがやさしく包むだけです。

芥川賞も直木賞もどちらでもとれる名作。
