   極北のアラスカに住み、アラスカの写真を撮り続けた故星野道夫の、新編フォトエッセイ集。多くの未発表写真と、既刊の著書から選りすぐった文章が収められている。

   しなやかな体で仲良くたわむれる白クマのカップルや、子に乳を飲ませている母馬、生まれたての子ジカが立ち上がるのを見守る親ジカ、親羊の背中に乗っているあどけない子羊など、アラスカの自然に生きる動物のカップルや親子が、ほっと心温まる情景を繰り広げている。

 「一頭のクマを見たことで、あたりの空間は突然ひとつの意味を帯びてくる」と星野道夫は書く。クマの存在を意識することが、忘れている生物としての緊張感を人に呼び起こしてくれるのだと。

   とはいえ、ここに登場している動物たちの家族写真のどれにもやさしい視線が注がれていて、彼らに備わる野生の怖さを忘れさせてしまう。手を伸ばせば頭をなでることもできそうな錯覚に陥るほどの、動物の「聖家族」集である。（中村えつこ）

吹雪の中、白熊が抱き合っている写真には胸がジーンと熱くなりました。
写真は人の心を映し出すという話を聞いたことがありますが、まさに
全ての写真に星野氏のとても優しいまなざしが垣間見えます。
是非是非一度その写真と「暖かな心」に触れて頂きたいです。
『オーロラの彼方に』も同時に素晴らしい一冊です。

星野道夫氏の撮る写真は、彼の誠実で正直な、詩的な文章とともに強い印象を与えてくれます。
言葉の一つ一つ、写真の一つ一つが温かく語りかけてくれ、私も写真集を買うようなたちではないのですが、
氏の写真だけは何度も何度も見直してしまいます。

正直、誰もがはずかしくて言えないけれども心に思っているようなことや、当たり前だけど言葉になって初めて感銘を受ける一言
を自然に温かく文章にしてしまう正直さ、誠実さはうらやましいほどです。
現在では小学校の教科書に文章が採用されたりしているようですが、あまりに劇的に亡くなられた氏の存在を

こうした手軽な本から知ってもらいたいと思います。

「Northern Dreams」の他のシリーズや氏の他の著書、写真集ともどもお勧めできる作品です。
写真集などの写真や著書の文章とかぶっているところ多数ですが、「総集編」として買う価値があるいいとこ取りの一冊だと思います。

全ての写真が、そして文章の一つ一つが心を揺さぶります。もともとこういう本を買うようなガラじゃないんですが、この本は何の迷いもなく買い、のめりこんでしまいました。とにかく脱帽ものです。
