10編の短編は、それぞれ形式や長さが異なりますが、どれも読み応えのある作品で、大変に面白かったと思います。全ての作品に共通している点は、細密画を描くがごとき丁寧な状況描写です。ミルハウザーは、精巧に出来た一枚の絵から物語を紡ぎだしている、あるいは文章によって一枚の絵を読者の心に描こうとしている、そんな印象を受けます。

道を歩いているとき、心配事が急にあたまを占拠する。
道の温度は失われ、空気は現実味を失い、
目に見えるもの、感じるものが、次第に頭の中で想像されたものになる。

小さなころから、蓄積されたイメージがある。
表題作「バーナム博物館」は現実の世界なのだろうか、
もしくは、僕が作った世界なのだろうか。
境界線を越えていく、ミルハウザーの幻想は、僕の妄想にリンクする。

表題作を含めた十編の短篇集です。
この「バーナム博物館」が、この本のタイトルになっているのには大きな意味があると思います。
と言うのは、「バーナム博物館」では、この博物館の性格等が語られているのですが、ある意味で、この本全体が「博物館」かも知れません。
「バーナム博物館」では、「自然な世界から怪奇・幻想の誤った世界へ」とか「不思議の殿堂」と言う様な言葉を使って、この「博物館」を表現しているのですが、まさにその言葉が、この本全体に与えるべき言葉だろうと思います。ですから、「バーナム博物館」は、この本のガイドブックと言えるのかも知れません。その意味では、この作品から読んだ方が読みやすいかも知れません。
「千夜一夜物語」や「不思議な国のアリス」などを題材に採った短篇もなかなか面白いのですが、個人的には、映画化もされた「幻影師、アイゼンハイム」が一番ピッタリときました。この短篇が一番解りやすいこともありますが、その醸し出す世界に引き込まれてしまいました。
