途中でやめることができなくなる。
読んでいるときは、ふーんとか思って読んでいるのだけど、
読み終わった後、いい映画を見た後のように、
どうしても、この「最後の物たちの」世界から、
離れられなくなってしまう。染み付いて離れなくなってしまう。
一度経験することをお勧めします。

未来都市だろうか？
衣食住にまつわるものから燃料、娯楽、社会的役割にいたるまで、
あらゆるものが磨り減り、消えてゆく国。
行方不明の兄を尋ね、この世界の住人となってあてもなく日々の生を繋ぐ娘。確かなものは、今在る自分だけ。時間を成さない時点の連続だけがある。
とてもヘンな世界だが、ひとつ、殺伐とした愛しさが残った。

ストーリーは、語り手であり主人公であるアンナが絶望的な状況においていかに生きたか、というもの。
私が思ったのは、たとえ最後の最後と思われる絶望でも、それは最後ではなく通過点なのであり、命が残っている限りは、その人生を味わい尽くすべきなのだ、ということ。
聡明なアンナは、常に思考し、感受し、拒否し、吸収しながらたくましく前へ進んでゆくものの、再び翻弄され、新たな困難の前に投げ出されてしまう。
これは常に繰り返される拷問のような悲劇なのだが、それでもアンナは負けなかった。
そして、これが希望を持つということなのだと思った。

ストーリー展開のテンポ、予測不能の事件、時に立ち止まって行う熟考など、オースターらしさも満載です。
