　ラヴクラフトは、副業として他人の小説の添削や代作を行っていたことでも知られる。
　本書は、そうした作品を訳出したもの。
下巻には、Ｈ．ヒールド「石の男」、「羽のある死神」、「博物館の恐怖」、「永劫より」、Ｄ．Ｗ．ライムル「山の木」、「墓を暴く」、Ｒ．Ｈ．バーロウ「すべての海が」、「夜の海」、Ｗ．ラムリイ「アロンゾウ・タイパーの日記」、Ｋ．スターリング「エリュクスの壁のなかで」が収録されている。
　作品によってラヴクラフトの介入度はかなり異なるようだ。アイデアだけ聞いて代作したものから、文章の添削くらいに留まるものまで。ものによってはクトゥルフ関係の言葉やテーマが出てきたりして面白い。
　秀作、駄作が入り混じっているが、下巻のが明らかに優れた作品が多かった。「羽のある死神」、「博物館の恐怖」、「エリュクスの壁のなかで」は秀作と思う。
　詳細な解説も嬉しい。
　怪奇ファンなら充分に読む価値のある一冊と思う。

前作同様、収録された作品のほとんど全てが既出作品の一冊なんで、コレクターとビギナー以外にはお勧めできない。
クトゥルーシリーズは現在でもたやすく入手できる上、ク・リトル・リトル神話集も復刊されるこのご時世、この書籍の存在意義はほとんどなしと言っても良い。
しかも、添削小説の一つである『the mound』を勝手に改訳の必要なしとして割愛しているのも酷い。改訳しなくて良いというなら、既出作品は全てカットして、詩篇やエッセイを多数掲載した方がよほど良いと思うが。
リサイクルで金儲けは、エコ・ビジネスのみで勘弁願いたいところである。
本来なら星などつけたくはないけど、訳者の独りよがりなクトゥルーグッズコレクションのお披露目コーナーが無くなってるから星一つ進呈。そんな紙幅あるなら、小品を一つ掲載願いたい所。

　『ラヴクラフト全集』もｱれにて完結とのことなので、感想をひと言。
　評者が思うに、クトゥルー神話というギミックなしで傑作と呼べるものは『インスマスを覆う影』くらいしか挙げられない。この別巻・下を通読しても感じたのだが、思わせ振りなほのめかし、形容詞過剰な文章が並んで「ほ〜ら、怖いぞ怖いぞ」と場末のお化け屋敷の呼び込みが声かけているみたいな駄作の群れがクトゥルーものの実態ではないのか。「クトゥルー神話」を共有している読み手同士が内輪で褒めあってるだけの代物と思えて仕方がない。クトゥルー神話なんか知らない方が予備知識抜きで読んだら、「何これ?」となること請け合いである。中篇・短篇作品がほとんどなのは、ストーリーを凝縮した結果ではなく、むしろ練り上げが未熟で長篇を構築するに耐えないためだろう。
　遠い親戚の遺産を図らずも相続した何某が怪しい雰囲気漂う古びた屋敷に泊まって体験する宇宙的恐怖……。ワハハハ!!なんというワンパターン。そんな物語の数々を読まされる破目になるので、HPL未体験者には「そのまま未体験が賢明」と申し上げたい。
