子供の頃、母が大好きだった「紅はこべ」を夢中になって読みました。今は、子供が気に入っています。主人公とだんなさんのやりとりは大人向けの本に詳しく書かれています。早く読みたい人は子供向け、じっくり味わいたい方は、大人向けをお勧めします。

　渦巻き、沸きかえり、ざわめいている群集、それは人間とは名ばかりで、というのは、いやしい欲望やはげしい復讐と憎しみをの念に燃えている群衆は、その形相から見ても叫び声からしても野獣そのものにほかならなかったからである（本文冒頭より）。この書き出しで、「絶対好きだ、これ」と思って買いました。
　フランス革命のギロチン処刑から逃れる貴族たちを救い出す秘密結社「紅はこべ」。その首領を捕らえようと画策するフランス革命政府のスパイ、ショーヴランとその陰謀に巻き込まれて葛藤するマルグリート夫人。「紅はこべ」をめぐる一大ロマン小説です。
　なんども読者をハラハラさせつつ、格好良く優雅にピンチを切り抜ける様はまさしくロマンの王道といえます。逆に展開が読めてしまうと少し退屈かもしれませんが、王道たる粋や著者と訳者の気の行き届いた台詞回しがとても魅力的でした。

一応ベルばら世代なので、小学生でフランス革命に出会い、
ほぼ同時に子供向けの「紅はこべ」に出会いました。
大の男がどうやってばあさんに化けるんだろう？
という疑問は抱きつつも
正体を隠して貴族を助ける紅はこべは、とても格好いいなあ~
と思ったものです。
大人向けの本も大筋は同じ。でも主人公夫妻の微妙な感情が描かれていて

一生懸命夫を追いかける妻の気持ちがよくわかります。

英国でドラマ化され、リチャード・Ｅ・グラントが
紅はこべを演じました。粋な感じが結構いいです。
でも奥様はミスキャスト。不釣合いな夫婦になってしまった。
