近年、ベストセラー小説の安易な映像化がやたらと多い。
話題になった小説はミステリに限らず、ほとんど映画化、ドラマ化されているといっても過言ではない。
ところが、この「慟哭」は売れ続けているにも関わらず全く映像化されていない。
私はそれが以前より不思議でしょうがなかった。

で、読んでみてようやくその理由がわかった。やっと得心した。
この小説のトリックを映像で表現するのは不可能なのだ。

お気に入りの小説が安易に映像化され、失望するという経験を最近やたらとしてきたが、「慟哭」にはそれがないとわかって安心した。

コアなミステリファンから「トリックが途中でわかった」という批判が散見されるが、この小説の魅力は何もトリックだけではないでしょう！
私はこの小説は上質のノワールとして読めた。
人間の暗い側面、心の闇。どうしようもない破滅に向かっていく男を見事に描いている。
トリックがわかった後の再読でも十分楽しめる。

知り合いから薦められた一冊でした。
あっと驚く結末があると聞いていたのですが
構えて読んでしまったからでしょうか？
中盤のあたりから、うすうす仕掛けに気づいてしまいました。
終盤になると、自分の考えが間違いないと確信して
ラストはやっぱりな…という感じで。
もう一ひねりの仕掛けが欲しかったです。
文章はとても読みやすく最後までノンストップで読めました。

慟哭：悲しみのために、声をあげて激しく泣くこと。

男はその光景を目の前にしても涙をこぼすことができなかった。だから代わりに心から大切なものがこぼれ落ちた。

故に『慟哭』。

物語は連続幼女誘拐殺害事件が起こる中、事件解決ため奮闘する捜査一課長と、徐々に新興宗教にのめり込んで行く男の二人の視点が交互に入れ替わりながら進んで行きます。
この中で筆者は冒頭から読者に対しあるトリックを仕掛けてきます。二人の主人公、警察内部の亀裂、新興宗教、そして事件の犯人…。これら全てが筆者の仕掛けたトリックの下で結末へと繋がって行く過程は非常に面白かったです。

色々な読み方があって良いと思いますが、下手に謎解きに集中するのではなく純粋に物語として楽しまれることをお勧めします。
（その方がラストの驚きも大きいと思いますよ。）
