　鬼才と呼ばれるフランス文学者リラダンの傑作。この『未來のイブ』は1886年に書かれたものだが、発明王エジソンを主人公に『人造人間は理想の女性たるか』というテーマを描いたこの小説は今読んでも十分に新鮮だ。この小説が書かれたときカレル・チャペックもまだ生まれていなかったとは信じられないくらいなのである。

また、翻訳もすばらしい。難解な字面の漢字をあえて多用した文は一見読みづらいが、一度入ってしまうと抜けられなくなる麻薬のような魅力がある。とっかかりは少々人を選ぶかもしれないが、お勧めできる小説である。

　復刊以来、静かに版を重ねているのは意外にもリラダンファンが多いことを示している。「人造人間の創造」というミステリアスな題材や絢爛たるレトリックに惹かれるのだろうが、その内容は深い思想的考察を核にした一筋縄ではいかぬ寓話である。

　主題は大きくわけてふたつ。まず青年貴族エワルドの純愛を軸とする「理想」の探求だ。女性の美しさとは？　魅力とは？……を起点に、前半、天才科学者エディソンとエワルドが弁証法的対話を展開。人間性の深奥まで踏みこんだ女性論や恋愛論をかわし、また人生観から芸術観、時代認識をまじえるなど、ふたりの会話を通して稀有な美意識や軽やかな機知、反俗精神に満ちあふれたリラダンの内的世界にふれることができる。

　さらに19世紀後半、長足の進歩をとげた科学に対する辛辣な風刺だ。それまでの論議をもとにエディソンはエワルドのために「ハダリー」という理想の人造人間を創るが、｢近代科学と天才の華｣はいざ誕生してみると、本来の役目をほとんどはたさず船火事で海の藻屑と消える運命に……。

　その完璧な創造物を海底深く葬り去るところに、科学万能社会やブルジョワ的功利主義、物質主義を呪い、冷笑し続けた孤高のリラダンが透かしみえてくる。それは現代への頂門の一針、黙示録的な啓示としてとらえることもできよう。

　「形而上学的芸術作品」と作者が冒頭で説明するように、豊饒なる思想とイメージの奔流には圧倒されるばかり。それも隠喩や象徴表現、逆説的言い回しなどが多く、なかなかの難物だ。

　また、彫琢された言語の神秘と、高貴な精神が織りなす古典の調べは酔わせるものがある。古格な名訳がテクストの生気、機微、風韻をありのまま伝えており、時間があれば熟読してその真髄をあじわいたい。

この小説は三島の評論にもよく出てくる。登場人物の生身の女は下品な女とし
て登場するのだが、これは全ての女の象徴である。男は、女のリアリズムと言
うか、本質的な下品さに付いて行けないようである。男はあくまで「清浄な」
理想を追求する。

私が特に印象的だったのは、エディソンも息が詰まりそうなほど、女の下品さ
に驚いている所だ。

齊藤磯雄の訳も堅剛流麗で素晴らしく美しい。
