　「英国短編小説の愉しみ」全３巻の第３巻。このシリーズは各巻ごとにテーマを設定して小説を集めているようだが、この巻は「不気味さ」。西崎氏お得意の怪奇小説風のものが多い。不気味さの正体が明かされないままの作品も多く、全３巻の最終巻としては最適。20世紀の作家がほとんどで、作品の傾向と時代性について考えさせられる。

　カヴァンの「輝く草地」は想像力の異常さに背筋が寒くなり、ニールの「写真」では親の身勝手さにあきれ果て、プリチェットの「ドン・フアンの生涯における一挿話」ではドン・フアンの偉大さを改めて確認させられる。
