　「英国短編小説の愉しみ」全３巻の第２巻。このシリーズは各巻ごとにテーマを設定して小説が集めているようだが、この巻は「異界とユーモア」と言えるだろう。おおむね明るい作品で、心温まる。18世紀のアディスンから20世紀の作家まで、手頃な短篇を幅広く読むことが出来る。

　アンスティーの「小さな吹雪の国の冒険」は事務弁護士という種の人間の特性をよく掴んでおり、ガーネットの「悪魔法王」ではプロテスタントとカトリックの対立に思いを馳せ、グージの「羊飼いとその恋人」では人形の恐ろしさを改めて確認させられる。
