初めてこの著者の本を読みました。

比較的読みやすい文章ではありますがどの章も一度どこかで使われたものを再び寄せ集めたせいなのか内容にまとまりが感じられませんし、不自然に重複していたりします。また対象読者を高校生など若い世代に定めていながら５０ページにも及ぶ大学教育、大学組織批判を繰り広げ、「研究費で本を買ってもほかの大学を移動する際には持っていけない」など読み手にはどうでもいい愚痴やら文句やら。この本のテーマにかすってもいないです。第一そのシステムの恩恵を受けて教授になった人物が偉そうに改革の必要性を説く点も疑問です。そして最後になりますが彼はＱ＆Ａの中でこういっています「社会学の本はマルクスなどの古典を読むべきで、二流の社会学者の書いた本など読むな」と。彼が一流かどうか評価するのは貴方です

橋爪の著書はいずれも平易かつ高い抽象性をもった言葉で語られる。それは長年に亘る基本的な訓練と徹底的な思考を経た者にしかよくし得ない文章だ。だから「新しがった」ところがない。
本書は新編集版とはいえ、９０年代後半、たとえばオウム真理教が世情を賑わせた時代の論考が中心を占めるが、今読んでも決して古くなっていない。このことをもって、評者はここにある言葉を抽象度が高いといいたい。それは本当の意味で実用的な知識となる。
最近喧伝される「使える」系のビジネス実用（その実、一過性で使えないが）とは意味合いが異なり、自ら考え抜くことを誘う。それは読者を甘やかせるものではない。
この頃流行の若い研究者・ヒヒョウ家先生の基本訓練を積んだとは思えない、社会学を矮小なものにする小器用な言論とはまるで違う。世界を総体で捉えようとするスタイルが社会学なのだと思わせる。といっても、「大きな物語」を語るというのではなく、人文・社会諸科学の基本原理を突き詰めた知によるラジカルな批評なのである。その仕事は、古典的な自然諸科学を駆使することでポアンカレ予想を解いたグレゴリー・ペレルマンを思わせる。尤もペレルマンの解明プロセスはまるでわからないが。

本書の次は、さらに抽象度の高い『言語派社会学の原理』に向われたし。
