ユクスキュルの『生物から見た世界』を読み始めたところ、私には難しかったのでまずは肩慣らしにと思い、本書を一読しました。素晴らしい一書です。生物学的多元主義とでも云うのでしょうか、「環世界」論の基本的な考え方が大変よく理解できました。即ち、人間を含む生物は、客観的な「環境」において生きるというよりは寧ろその生物種なりの特性に従い、自らがイリュージョン能力によって切り取った主観的な「環世界」において生きているのだということです。

中でも、人間が知覚できないことを他の生物がやすやすと成し遂げてしまう驚異の挿話、例えば、紫外線が見えるモンシロチョウのオスは紫外線を反射する裏翅を持った固体をメスであると識別する話（80頁、103頁）や昆虫が醤油とソースを触れただけで見分ける接触科学感覚の話（132頁）などは全て大変興味深く、人間の生物種としての限定存在性に改めて蒙を啓かれました。

「ひとつの環境というものは存在しない･･･　それぞれの動物の主体が構築している世界があるだけであって、この環世界は動物の種によってさまざまに異なっているのである。」（131頁）
「それぞれの動物主体は、自分たちの世界を構築しないでは生きていけないのである。」（137頁）

叙述は極めて平易にして明快であり、一つのことが何回も丁寧に説明されていることから、筆者の考えが頭にすっと入ってきます。正に、科学啓蒙書の手本と云えるでしょう。若い頃にこういう本を読んでおくと、ものの観方や考え方がぐっと広がってくるように思います。

文体は平易だが、内容は哲学的だ。しかし、難しくはないが、それも書き手の力なのか。私たちは、意味の世界しかいきられない。そしてその世界は真理的現実ではないが、その世界を通して、私たちは現実に新しい発見をする。本書をよみ、自身を省みるとき、世界が少し違って見える。

私は、この本を読む前は動物が見ている世界を考えることなどほとんどなかった。
この本は猫をはじめとする動物の例を挙げて、世界の見え方の違い、匂いや音を感知した行動など、とても興味深いものだった。
動物の世界観にもいろいろあり、おもしろい。
内容も丁寧に説明されているので筆者の考えは理解しやすかったと思う。
ペットなど普段何気なく見ている動物も、注意して見てみると今まで気付かなかった新しい発見があるかもしれない。
