私が紅茶好きになったきっかけの本です。紅茶研究家の磯淵猛氏の最初のエッセイ集です。もちろん紅茶の淹れ方やフルーツティーにミルクティーの淹れ方の説明もありますが、紅茶にこんなに素敵な物語があふれていると知った本でもあります。磯淵氏の本には紅茶がある風景がいつも描かれています。

最初に出会った磯淵さんの本がこれでした。小さい頃から朝食に紅茶がでる生活の私にも、目からウロコの連続でした。読んでいると味や、香りまで漂ってくるような本です。
これを見ながら紅茶を入れているのであちこち染みだらけになってしまったので、そのうち買い換えようかと思っています。

　1989年に楽という出版社から出た単行本の文庫化。
　後半の100頁ほどが新たに書き下ろされている。
　紅茶についての書き手としては、一番、信頼できるのがこの人と思う。紅茶についての知識、美味しい飲み方、ちょっとした工夫などが簡潔に説明されている。この本が書かれた1989年には、まだまだ紅茶というものが日本人にはちゃんと受け入れられていなかったようだ。その頃に比べると現在はずいぶん状況が変わったものだ。
　著者お得意のフレッシュなフルーツを使った紅茶も色々と紹介されており、挑戦してみたくなる。
　後半の書き下ろしは、スリランカ旅行記。紅茶の仕入れで何度となくスリランカを訪れている著者だが、そのなかから印象に残るエピソードがいくつか紹介されている。スリランカの人々の優しさが伝わってくるような話が多く、読み心地が良かった。
