はっきり書こう。「パリの憂鬱」以外は、たいしたことのない文章なのである。
だがお断りしておく。それは、あの『悪の華』においてのこの上なく崇高かつ邪悪であったCBを意識して読んでしまうから、「たいしたことがない」のである。水準は充分満たしているのだ。
「ラ・ファンファルロ」だが、これを読めば、なぜ彼があくまで批評家であって詩人であったかがわかる。つまらないのだ。小説としてまったく出来が良くない。だから彼はこれ以上小説は書かなかった。
「人工天国」は…これも、言葉のあらゆる意味で失敗。別に１９世紀でもぶどう酒やハッシシ、アヘンの研究くらいなされていた。それを批評家ごときがやってなにになるのか。まったくダメな文章。
それでも☆５つのしたのは…彼が「ダンディズム」を、階段から転げ落ちて死ぬ運命にあっても、決してうしないたくなかった…そんな情熱、パッションが否応なしに伝わってくるから。アルベール・カミュは彼の箴言をやや引用し間違えて「ダンディは鏡の前で生活し、死ななければならない」と書いた。本当は「眠らなければならない」である。まあそれは置いておいて、どこまでも文士魂を失いたくなかった、女嫌いでありたかった、梅毒による痴呆なんかで死にたくはなかったCBのうめき声…いや魂のANGSTを、どうしようもなく腑抜けていた１９世紀フランスの凡庸詩人どもに大声で叫んでいたかった、そんな彼には、たとえ４０代で死んでしまっても、そのソウルをわずかでも見つけることができる我々は、彼に拍手を送る義務があるに違いないのだ。我々も鏡の前で生活して、鏡の前で最期を迎えよう。４０を過ぎてもダンディ魂を忘れられなかった彼は、残念なことにドラッグによってでしか救われなかったらしい。だからこそ彼を忘れずにいよう。
