内容については他の多くの方が絶賛している通りなんですが、本当に大好きな本です。るきさんの生活が私の理想です。
生活できるだけ、働いて、後はのんびり暮らす・・・ドラマ「すいか」が好きな人なんかにおすすめです。
驚くのは、これが1988年~1992年という日本がバブルに踊っていた時、その象徴とも言える「ＨＡＮＡＫＯ」に連載されていたこと。

その当時から「こんなのは本当の生活じゃない」と思っていた人が結構いたということなんでしょうか？

主人公の「るきさん」は、この世のいかなるしがらみにもとらわれず、自由気ままに飄々として生きているように見える。
浮世離れした、どこか超越した感じの「るきさん」に対し、友人の「えっちゃん」は、ごく現実的、世俗的で常識的な人。
「えっちゃん」から見ると、「るきさん」は危なっかしくてしょうがないわけだが、「るきさん」自身はその心配をよそに、それなりに現実社会に適応し、案外たくましい。
「るきさん」の生き方に憧れる気持ちは、しかし決して渇望するような激しいものではなく、ほんのりと心を満たすような、柔らかい充足感にも似ている。
「るきさん」は、どこに行っても、何をしても、いつも「るきさん」であり続ける。
つくづく、幸せは自分次第であり、自分で生み出すものであり、また、幸せの定義自体、そもそも、周りではなくて自分自身が決めるものなのだなあと思わせられる。

1988〜92年に雑誌「HANAKO」に掲載。最終回（３ページ）を除き、見開き２ページの短編である。掲載がバブルの絶頂期に始まり、バブル崩壊とともに主人公・るきさんがイタリアへ行ってしまって終了、というのは、偶然ではないだろう。

バブルとはまったく無縁に、戦前世代の日本人のように暮らするきさんは、誰もが砂上楼閣に酔いしれていた心ない時代において、強力なアンチテーゼとして機能したと思われる。しかも、るきさんは決して古風な女性ではない。世間の常識を意に介していないらしい自由な性格である。もっとも、それは孔子の言う「不踰矩」であり、淡々と描かれているものの、実は常人にはとても手の届かない境地である。

これに対し友達のえっちゃんは、バブルに浮かれる世間から影響を受けても、その恩恵を享受できるわけではない庶民である。大半の読者はえっちゃんの立場にあり、るきさんをある意味で羨ましく思う一方、自身には真似できない、異質の存在としてるきさんを相対化する。それが本作品の笑いの立脚点であると思う。

単純ながら表現力のある構図と描線、まったく事件は起こらないのに楽しく読ませる技術は、いずれも出色。名作と呼ばれるに十分値する。
