A number of times I’ve met Japanese women who have American friends or who want to have American friends.
However they come up with a major problem.
In many ways their friend is really nice but he chooses to speak in English only.
Because the Japanese women are a bit limited in their English they cannot talk about themselves much.
They end up being mainly a listener when actually they are very interesting people with a lot to say.
Their American friends tend to under-rate them or treat them as children.
While they are thinking of the right word to say, the subject changes.

Why not study more English?
The trouble is the text books and the phrase books are written about someone else.
The conversation teachers are teaching about someone else’s ideas.
What’s to be done?

Why not write your own text book?
You’ve got to be joking!
No, that seems to be the idea behind this book.

It’s a bit like making an identikit picture of yourself.
You take a page at a time and select from the choices to build up a picture of yourself.
And after describing yourself you’ve more than half learnt the phrases too.

I hope a lot of Japanese people get onto this book and present themselves to foreigners as the interesting people they really are.

類書とは異なり、項目がかなり絞り込まれているので、初心者には素晴らしい入門書と言えます。また、英会話に挫折した人にも、もう一度初歩からやり直すキッカケを与えてくれる良書です。著者自身が言うように、繰り替えしＣＤを聴き、口ずさむことで、短期間（１日１０分、１か月）に自分のことを語れるようになると思います。また、各項目の最後にある、コラムでの解説も初心者には参考になります。難を言えば、各項目の選択肢を最低５つにすると、読者はさらに会話の幅を広げることができると思います。また、第３章の５Ｗ１Ｈの例文も、いまの倍くらいにすると、さらに利用価値が高まるでしょう。中級者用、上級者用の出版が待たれます。

かなり絞っているので、覚えることが多すぎないのがグッド。全ての項目が３つの文からなっていて、最初の文は超基本。My name is ○○くらいの、自分もこれくらいならできる、というレベル。でもその後の二文は発展文で、自分で単語を入れて文を完成させる様式。自分専用のネタ本になるところが使える。ＣＤで発音もチェックできるので安心。あとは練習するだけ・・・。結局は自分の努力だよね。次回はもう少し中上級向けを作ってほしい。
