　１粒で２度おいしい本です。おいしいところ１、基本的なマクロ金融論の教科書的な知識が身につく。おいしいところ２、歴史における経済的なイベント（昭和恐慌、江戸時代の各改革、幕末期の金流出な、第一次大戦後のハイパーインフレなど）の意味を１の基礎知識をベースに理解可能となる。
　この２のうち、昭和恐慌に関してはすでに、いわゆるリフレ派（本書の著者も含む）の面々の類書でさんざん書かれていることなので、特に目新らしさはない。一方、江戸時代のほうは、大岡越前の改鋳は武士からも特に批判されることはなかったのに、その後の改鋳はことごとく批判されており、その理由と必ずしも商人にとってはマイナスでない（批判を書くのはもっぱら知識階級である武士なので、なんとなくすべて悪いと考えてしまう。）ことなど、目から鱗の話が書いてあります。
　という具合に間違いなくいい本なのですが、雑誌連載が元になっているため、（つまり１回ごとにそれなりのまとまりをもたないといけない制約がある。）おいしいところ１と２が同時進行になっていて、１についての理解のすっきり感に欠けるところ。（各章末のまとめがそれを補ってはいるが）また、歴史と経済の両方に興味があり、かつかなりまじめに金融論を勉強したいと考える読者層がどれくらいいるのかという点での本の販売戦略に疑問があるので、１つ星を減らしました。でも、値段の分の価値はあるので、みんなに読んでほしいと思う本です。

積極的に執筆活動を行う若手経済学者の新刊である。著者は、日経・経済図書文化賞を受賞して話題になった「昭和恐慌の研究」（岩田規久男編）の共著者でもある。同書でなされた、近代経済学の立場から日本経済史を捉えなおすという視点を保ちつつ、テーマを貨幣理論に絞り、対象を入門者に絞った好著である。

明示はされていないが、基本的にはケインズ経済学を軸として、マネタリズム、マルクス経済学の貨幣観の基礎的な部分は網羅するよう配慮がなされている。その上で、貨幣数量説、為替レート、金融政策の3点を説明している。

各テーマについて説明された後、それを主として江戸時代から昭和初期の日本経済に当てはめるという構成になっているため、結果として各史実については時代が前後する。その為、日本史の知識が十分でないとやや頭がついていかない部分があった。但し、このような難しいテーマを入門者にも分かりやすく説明する著者の力量は相当なものであり、感心させられる。高校などで日本史をしっかりと勉強し、経済学の第一歩に踏み入れたい方などには特にお薦めである。

興味深い歴史的事象を取っ掛かりに
初心者でもすらすら読めるよう書いてはあるが
なかなかどうして、無駄を削ぎ落とされ
ハードな内容の詰まった良書である。

きちんと読みこなすには、経済学史や金融史の
基礎的な知識があった方がいいのだが、
本当に系統だった論理展開がされているので
丁寧に納得しながら読み進めていけば
これ一冊で貨幣理論の考え方の基礎が
身についてしまうのではないだろうか。
