昭和38年の正月に二つの大きな遭難がありました。
一つは薬師岳での13人遭難。
太郎小屋に降り立った朝日新聞社の記者が「太郎小屋に人影なし」と伝えた
愛知大学山岳部の遭難です。
そしてもう一つが、本書が扱うリーダである野呂氏のみが生還し、
部員10人が死亡した遭難です。
1959年を境に遭難に対する報道が厳しくなり始めた時期に当たります。
地元のルポライターが書き、地元の出版社が出版した力作です。
ここに来て語ることも、書くことも波紋を覚悟しての事でしょう。
著者川嶋氏は相当に感情を抑えて書かれたことが窺えます。
本書は表題の通り、野呂氏の生まれ育ったサハリンに始まり、
生還後のリハビリ、教職、セールスマン、会社経営の現在に至るまでを
簡素に記述しています。
ハンディーキャップスキー協会や北海道盲導犬協会が推薦図書とするように
十分な生を突き進まれていることが、理解できます。
ただ私はその野呂氏の生き方に感動するより、遭難死した10人を思うより
遺体発掘のために卒業を1年間延ばした佐々木典夫氏の生と死に強い衝撃を感じました。
勿論無二の親友であった野呂氏のそれは想像に容易いことです。
これを読者に発見させる川嶋氏は名ガイドといえるでしょう。

主人公が凄すぎて、ついていけませんでした。
よって共感も無く、傍観するのみ。
ただただ凄い人だなぁと思いました。

野呂の生い立ち、山登りをするようになったきっかけ、遭難、その後の
人生・・・。真実の重みがずしっと伝わってくる。とくに遭難の描写は
言葉がない。凄まじいの一言に尽きる。冬山の恐ろしさをいやという
ほど思い知らされる。一人また一人と雪の中で力尽きていく仲間たちを
目の前にした野呂の心境は、いったいどれほどの苦痛を伴ったものだったの
だろう？リーダーなのに一人生き残ってしまった野呂を責める遺族もいた。
「死んでいった１０人の分まで生きなくては！」そう決意する野呂。
それは、２４歳の若者が背負うにはあまりにも大きくて重いものだった。
だが彼はくじけなかった。凍傷により身障者となった彼のその後の人生は、
読む人に勇気を与えてくれる。読後も、心に深く余韻が残る作品だった。
