　本書は、心理学の交流分析（ＴＡ：Transactional Analysis、アメリカのエリックバーン博士：E.Berne 1910〜1970が創設）で扱う領域の、特に、人生脚本に関する本である。

　人は、幼児期に親との交流を通して出した結論を基に人生脚本を形成する。そして、成長するに従い脚本を強化していくが、脚本の源は親の未熟なC（こどもの心）が発する不合理な至上命令（脚本指令）にある。特に、異性の親から受けた脚本指令に従って人生を生きている。一方、同性の親や周囲の人々からの影響により、脚本指令に対抗する脚本（対抗脚本）を身に付けていく。しかし、重要なのはこの対抗脚本により順風満帆に人生を営んでいっているように見えても、その状態に不安、居心地の悪さを感じ、必ず最終的には脚本指令に従ってしまうということである。（｢三つ子の魂百まで」という諺は人生の真髄）

　本書では、幾つかの治療例や、マリリンモンローの人生脚本の分析例を紹介している。彼女の脚本分析の結果（一部抜粋）は以下の通り。
・テーマ：自己破壊への道
・脚本指令：幸福になってはいけない、愛を持続させてはいけない。
・対抗脚本：立派な女優になれ、芸術家たれ。
・基本的な構え：私も他人もOKではない、私は一人ぼっち、私は誰からも真剣に愛してもらえない。
・幼児の結論：愛情関係は全て壊れるものだ。
・脚本：持続なき愛。

　脚本指令の影響は甚大であるが、脚本を書き換えること（治療）により、今までと違った人生を生きるようになった人（治療）の例も紹介されている。

　本書は、読み返す度に、自分の人生や生きざまについて、気付きや洞察が得られる本である。

本書は米国で精神分析的な心理療法を学び、
帰国後、心療内科で交流分析を実践されてきた著者によって、
交流分析の、中でも人生脚本とその分析に重点を置いて書かれた書である。

アメリカの精神科医エリック・バーンが提唱した
一種の性格理論である交流分析では、
「人生脚本」という考え方がその中心を占めている。
その考え方は、生後まもなくの養育者とのふれあいのあり方と、
その後の人生の早期体験がもとになって
ひとりひとりの人生の青写真が出来上がり
これが人の一生を左右する原動力の一つになる、というものである。

本書はこのような人生脚本がどうしてできるのか
多くの事例が採り上げられ、分析されている。
特に後半のマリリン・モンロー（敗者としての人生脚本）や
勝海舟（勝者としての人生脚本）の分析は
これだけでも読むに値する珠玉の分析である。
