「生物図録」が素晴しかったので、こちらも買った。どのページも色鮮やかで、工夫されたイラストやグラフが満載。開いて眺めてページをめくっているだけでも楽しい。視覚的に興味を沸き立たせると同時に、本来目に見えにくいものをうまく理解させるために、とてもよく考えて構成されてている。

ところどころ詳細部分ではレベルの高い説明が行われている部分が多い。また、カーボンナノチューブ、Tiを使った光触媒の話しなどは、日本が世界をリードしている最新研究だ。こういうテーマは大学受験などにはあまり出ないだろうが化学が好きな若い人たちにぜひ知って欲しいという編集者達の熱意が伝わってくる。また、近年の遺伝子ブームを反映して化学と生物学のつながりに言及してある部分があったりと、コンパクトな内容ながら、読みやすく見た目が良いだけではなく、深く知りたい人にもそれなりに応えてくれる構成になっている。有機化学に関する説明の充実ぶりもうれしい。

各ページの下部に、さりげなくわかりやすいQ&A集が付いていたりする。巻末には、日本のノーベル化学賞受賞者が紹介されている。もちろん、データ類も過不足ない。大変よく練られている。読み応えがある。興味深い一冊である。生物図録には各ページの下にある英語表記の用語説明も巻末についている。

最後に、科学的な書籍に対してこういうコメントは失礼かもしれないが、内容の充実度から比較して考えると、本書のシリーズはかなりお買い得である。まず、科学系の書物の比較でいくと、Newtonムック別冊シリーズ1冊の半分の値段で、BlueBacksシリーズの新刊とほぼ同じ価格帯にある。大して中身のない新書や文庫でさえ700円を超えるものがそう珍しくなくなった時代に、総カラーでイラストや写真満載の内容で良質な複数の研究者のコラムも入って紙質も良くてこの値段は本当に安い。分厚くないから場所もとらない。半端な図鑑類を買うより、よほどお勧めである。

理科の理解を深めるためには視覚的な補強は必要不可欠です。本書は全カラーの図解で、化学への理解を大いに助けることとなると思います。内容も、教科書よりは半歩ほど詳しく解説されており、「ゆとり」での項目削減の防波堤となり得る。何より、理科好きならば本書を眺めているだけでワクワクしてくるはずです。価格も非常に良心的です。申し分無い１冊と言えるでしょう。進学校の生徒の大半は学校から本書を与えられているのではないでしょうか。

初版には数点の間違いが見られましたが、改訂版では修正されていて安心しました。

改訂版ですが、中学生から大学生まで十分使えるとても解りやすい内容と成っている。生体構成分子はもちろん、最新の環境問題までもがくまなく理解できます。ページ一杯にカラー写真、図表を取り入れ、それらの解説のために説明がなされていると言う感じで、本来の逆の構成となっているところが面白い。私のように文系で生物学はどうしても苦手な方には目から鱗です。価格もこれだけの内容で1,000円以下は安いと思います。
