フランス19世紀後半の作家ロティの半ば自伝的な小説。フランス海軍将校の主人公が駐留先のイスタンブールで既婚のムスリム女性に恋し、関係を持ってしまう。

ロティの作品の大半に見られる「エキゾチスムを求めその地その地で女性に恋をする」傾向はここにも健在ですが、この作品の良いところはどのようにして当時の白人男性が異郷の地に惹かれるか、その過程が手に取るように分かるところです。

その土地に対する知識不足も手伝い、主人公が自由に自分の「妄想」に浸ることができるため、オスマン帝国をはじめとするムスリムの住む国に対するステレオタイプを長々とご披露してくれます。

くしくも当時、イギリスやフランスなどではロマンス主義と結びついてOrientalismという形で中東に対する憧れが顕著に表れてきていてそのひとつの形としてロティのようなOrientalistの作家が人気を得たのです。エドワード・サイドの『オリエンタリスム』を事前に読んでおくと時代背景が良く分かると思います。

なお日本に関しても『japoneries d'automne（秋の日本）』『Madame Chrysantheme（お菊さん）』を著していて彼の日本論を知るために役立つと思います。
