測量技術書かと思いきや、数学の天才ガウスと探検家フンボルトを主人公に彼らが成し遂げた数々の発見・業績を物語風に書き綴ったドイツ発の冒険小説。ワールドベストセラーになったとだけあってなかなか面白いです。

数学にまつわる話を小説にしたという意味では小川洋子の「博士の愛した数式」的な側面もありますが、この本はむしろ、ガウスとフンボルトが歴史的発見をした当時のエキサイティングな情景を文章から想像できる楽しさを提供してくれます。現在において日々たくさんの発見があるのでしょうが、「歴史的な大発見」となるとなかなかありませんよね。だからこそ「歴史的な大発見」をした彼らを主人公にしたこの小説は読む人に爽快感を与えつつある種の疑似体験をさせてくれるのかもしれません。難しい数式はでてきませんが、文体はやや固いです。

「ダビンチコードやハリーポッターを超えたドイツのミリオンセラー小説」なんていうので、手にとってみたのだけれど、ちょっと思惑と違いました。かなり大人向き。偉人伝好きの私としては、２人の天才が全く違う手法で、世界を理解しようとするその極端な生きざまは、面白かったです。ただし、文体がかっちりしているので、子供にはちょっときびしいかも。小説好き、偉人伝好きの中学生以上なら読んで楽しいかも。僕の記憶の中では、フンボルトもガウスも、たぶん中学高校の世界史で習ったとき以来、久々の登場でしたし、正直どんな偉人だったかも忘れていました、が、今回この本を読んで、かなり記憶に深く刻まれました。目的が同じでもアプローチの手法はひとそれぞれ、解き明かそうとする情熱こそが大切なんですよね。

NHKの「テレビでドイツ語」で児玉清さんが紹介していたので、読んでみました。
ガウスもフンボルトも理系な人っていう知識しかなかったのですが、かなりぶっとんだ人物描写で面白かったです。とくにガウスの浮き世ばなれぶり（？）は、読んでいて次は何してくれるんだろうと、ハラハラドキドキします。「哲学的冒険小説」とありましたが、哲学的かどうかはわかりませんが、楽しい冒険小説であるのは確か。読み応えがあります、最初の30ページが苦労しましたけれど。
