ミッチェル,グラディス
1901‐1983。イギリス、オックスフォードシャーに生まれる。ロンドン大学で歴史学をおさめ、教員生活を送りながら探偵小説の執筆に手を染め、1929年、第1作「迅速な死」を発表。心理学者ミセス・ブラッドリーを探偵役としたオフビートなユーモアに満ちたシリーズで、英国ファルス派を代表する作家として絶賛される

宮脇 孝雄
1954年生まれ。早稲田大学政経学部卒業。翻訳家・エッセイスト(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

探偵が魔女！

というだけでも、変わっていますが何とも凄いのは筋の外れたところで事件が起きること。誘拐されたり殴り合いがあったりクリケットの試合が克明に書かれていたりしている最中に、脇から死体が転げだしてくるのです。それでいて全くまとまりがないのかというとさにあらず。結局一つの方向に収束してしまいます。どたばたしている内に散会してしまい人がすくなくなってから無理矢理犯人を挙げる解決といい、今までの日本には無かったストーリ立ての傑作です

とても不思議な魅力を持ったミステリです。

イギリスの小さな村で起こる殺人事件。語り手は、村の教会の副牧師。その穏やかな語り口で、彼の恋愛模様を交えながら、物語はすすんでいく。などと書くと、星の数ほどあるコージー派ミステリっぽいものかと思われるかもしれません。確かにコージー派にはピッタリの舞台と事件です。が、クッキーに紅茶のコージー派（偏見かなり有り）には決して書けないようなミステリです。

殺人事件をはじめ、こまごまとした事件が何件か起こるのですが、ちょっとズラして（詳しく書くの、やめときます）書いてあって、その技巧に舌を巻き、悪辣と言ってもいいくらいの意地悪さに怒りをとおりこして感動すら覚えてしまいます。その勢いにかられて読み進んでいくと、一番最!後!!にある探偵（これがまた不思議で魅力的（？）な女性）の手記、これにアゼンとさせられます。
最後の最後まで、なんとも人を食ったとんでもないミステリ、おすすめです！
