「ブライトン街道で｣を平井呈一のアンソロジーで読んでからずっと気になっていた作家の短編集です。
表題作の｢幽霊船｣はユーモラスな怪談、幽霊の出てくるほら話といった感じで非常におもしろかったです。
このような雰囲気のものはこれ１作きりだったのが残念に思えました。
これを読むまでミドルトンは怪談作家なのかと思っていましたが、はっきりとそう分類できる作品は少なく、ほとんどが幻想〜普通小説でした。
古典怪談が読みたいという理由でこの本を手に取った方は読むのは前半の数編だけでいいと思います。その数編だけでも読む価値はあります。
ただ派手な物語や恐怖があるわけではないので「つまらない」と感じる人にはとことんつまらない本なのかもしれません。
個人的には少しずつじっくりと読んでいきたい本です。

リチャード・ミドルトンの短編集なのですが、ほとんどの短編が彼の少年時代の不平不満の羅列です。具体的には、少年時代の学校の不満、学友の不満、兄弟や家庭の不満etc。彼が子供時代に感じた暗い気分や大嫌いな学校生活が羅列されているだけの短編もあります。とにかく、彼の暗い思想や不平不満がたらたら書かれているだけで、読んでいるほうまで暗い気分になってきます。リチャード・ミドルトンは、生きている時には、どこの出版社からも彼の本を出版してもらえなかったそうですが、この本を読んでその理由がよくわかりました。
表題作の「幽霊船」は、作者の不平不満ではありませんが、筋の通らないメチャクチャな話で、けっしてホラーではありません。ファンタジーに近いジャンルでしょう。
