イギリスの歴史を児童用に物語にしたものです。
歴史をファンタジックに描いているのが印象に残りました。

ダンとユーナの二人の子供が妖精パックを介して
歴史上の人物たちと出会い、祖国の過去の
「けがれなき歴史」（本書370頁）をインプットしていきます。
（アメリカ独立革命が欠如していたのはなぜか？）
「サクソン人でもなく、ノルマン人でもなく、
イングラン人として」（アクイラの口癖）という
言葉がリチャード卿の話の箇所で何度も現われました。
つまり、ブリテン島にいる人々は言語、信仰、肌の色など
諸々の特徴を捨ててイングランド人として結束しようということです。
ここでも大英帝国の中の植民地の人々も各々の特徴を捨てて、
イギリス人になろう、という植民地主義的思考が
キプリングの頭に働いていたと思います。
「神の慈悲によって　全人類のよりどころとなる
真実がもたらされるでしょう」（本書370頁）
「文明化の使命」という名の植民地支配。
ファンタジックに空気に弄ばれるのは心地よかったですが、
どこかダークなところがありました。

翻訳者の金原瑞人・三辺律子両氏は解説およびあとがきにおいて
確かに本書は植民地主義的な箇所はあるけれども、
読書にはキプリングの空想を純粋に楽しんで欲しい、
との趣旨のことが書かれています。
しかし植民地主義を深刻に考えすぎる性質の私にとって、
近代イギリス人の思考およびイギリス･ナショナリズムの形成の観点から
本書が翻訳されたことの意義は大きいと思いました。
