下巻は淳子が別の能力者と出会い、変わっていきます。
「装填された銃」から「人間」になったと感じている淳子がせつなすぎます。そしてラスト。悲しいけど、淳子にとってはあれで幸せだったのかなって考えて、涙しました。
正義とは？悪とは？・・・はっきり言い切れる答えはないのかもしれません。

相手に触れずに殺すことができる念力放火能力を持つ青木淳子と、それを追う刑事の石津ちか子の視点でストーリーが展開。異能者としての力を持ち、それを駆使し、自らを「正義」と信じる淳子のせつなさ、悲しさなどといったものがつづられており、素直に面白かった。確かにＳＦではあるのだけれども、特別だからこそ、蔑まれる悲しさのようなものが伝わってきた。

下巻は上巻とは一転して、心理描写が多い。自らの「正義」への疑問、同じ異能者である理解者を得ての些細な幸せ・・・。
ある意味では予想通りの結末を迎えたのだが、それでも淳子の悲しさなどが伝わってくるものでまったく不満には思わなかった。

宮部みゆきの長編はともかく仕掛けがある、というのが特徴であった。犬に物語を語らせたと思えば、三つの物語がクライマックスで交差する、というのもあった。しかし、この物語には仕掛けがない。章立てもない。だからいつものように、｢終章」として、事件が終わった後に、改めて物語の本質が現れるような構成にもなっていない。上巻の最初にクライマックスがあって、そのあとはラストに向かって、作者最長の長編を駆け下りていったという感がする。その意味で、これはじつは長編の体を借りた短編小説だったというのが私の解釈である。(おっ、やはり仕掛けがあるじゃないか^_^；)全てはラスト近く、主人公青木淳子にあのセリフを言わせるために……。
