この本は、イタリア人のバランス感覚や人生において何を大切に生きて
いるかがわかるとても貴重な本であると思います。

職業というものに対して常に誠実で人生を楽しむための方策を自分なり
に考えているこの本の中に登場する人物たちは、とても魅力的にそして
身近に感じることができました。

この作品の中ですごいなと思ったのは、いいお客さんを選ぶという行為
について語っている場面が複数出てきたことです。

大量生産、大量消費に流されず本当に尊厳ある仕事をするためには
自分自身がその仕事に対して誠実であると同時に、それを評価する
お客さんの存在ってとても大事なんだなと思いました。

その関係性が、今後の日本においてもとても必要なことになるのでは
ないかな？と考えたりしました。

世の中には様々な職業があるが、それに自信をもって、また内から溢れる情熱をもってしている人がどれだけいるだろうか。この本を読むと、仕事というものが素晴らしいものに思えてくるし、業種は違ってもトップクラスにいる人々のしてきたことが似ているのに気づく。現状がどうであれ、自分の好きなものに情熱をもって努力を積み重ねていく。それを実践してきた人の話だ、と思う。
そして、それぞれの職業の実態が分かって非常に興味深い。日本にない職業ばかりだ。ハリウッドのスターであっても年間に１本買えるか買えないかという究極のハムの職人、モデル出身の美人靴磨き職人など、全部で15の話があるが、毎回楽しみで飽きさせない。

自己啓発としても読めるし、世界の職業を知るというエンターテイメントとしても読める一冊。値段からいっても、損はない！

イタリアの人口は5700万人。そこに法人登録が2000万社あるそうだ。ちょっとウェブで検索してみたが、日本はせいぜい数百万みたい。イタリアに中小企業が多いのはよく知られているが、この数にはさすがに驚く。

本書では、イタリア各地できらりと光る中小企業をピックアップしてイタリア的働き方を紹介している。ローマの靴磨き屋、ベネチアの水上タクシー、有名レース優勝の自転車製作を独占する自転車メーカー、、、等々。中でもこのハム職人の言葉が印象的だった。ロレンツォ・オズヴァルドが作るハムは専門誌で世界最高級品に選ばれたが、オズヴァルドは依然として年間1500本しかハムを作らない。値段も上げない。それをこうやって説明する。

＜「必要以上に高い価格はつけません。私がハム作りにかける手間ひまに対する評価分と、上質の原材料代が組み込めればそれでいい。仕事の内容に対する、きちんとした評価が何より大切で、それは私と家族に対する評価でもあると思います。［…］」＞(p. 124)

「仕事の内容に対する、きちんとした評価」っていったい何だろう。評価はお金でしかできないわけではないが、お金は便利なのでだいたい「稼ぎ」「値段」を評価の代用品として使ってしまっている。それは便利だが安直で薄っぺらい評価でしかない。分かっているはずなんだけど、ときどきオズヴァルドみたいな人に言われないと忘れてしまいそうになるね。
