この本の良い点は、提示されている慣用表現の選択が非凡で、どの会話集にものっていないようなものが選択されているところである。熟語になるほど熟していないが、なかなか日本人が真似できない表現が多数収められているので、かなりの上級者でも裨益するところが大であると思う。

欠点は、まず対訳がないことである。注もついてはいるが、やはり外国人がつけた注なので、辞書をひけば簡単に分かるような単語に注があるのにもかかわらず、注がなければ解釈に迷うような文法事項には注がないこともある。

この本の他の欠点として会話の内容がおもしろくないことを挙げている人もいるが、私はそうは思わない。確かに内容も古く、小説を読むようなおもしろさはないかもしれないが、選ばれた会話文はいろいろな場面での会話であり、暗記すれば役立つものが多い。

この本はただ読み流すだけでは全く力はつかない。ＣＤを合わせて購入し、繰り返し音読しなければ効果は薄いといえるだろう。

本書は、プレゼンテーション、ダイアログ、語彙、練習問題からなり、CDも買って（高いが）、書取り、繰返し音読し、暗記すれば、「学習としての英会話」を卒業できる。実践としての英会話には不十分。内容が中学生の教養的なもの（アメリカの国立公園とかアメフトとか）で現代性がなく退屈ではあるが、アメリカ人の日常生活のごく一般的なことを学ぶ上では役にたつので、これを卒業してから英字新聞等で現代的知識を学べばよい。なお、本書のプレゼンテーションの暗記は英検1級の2次面接試験におおいに役立った。解説がないに等しい点で星一つ減らした。別途文法書や英作文参考書を勉強しておく必要がある。

ＣＤと共に使ってます。ストーリー物からイディオムや単語が覚えられるのがうれしいです。ＣＤがもう少し安かったら星５つ。
