「戦艦大和」「地球SOS」など少年雑誌巻頭を飾ったＳＦ絵物語やイラスト、「サンダーバード」のプラモデルの箱絵など、
日本の少年なら見たことがない人はいないであろう、これら作品を描いた 小松崎茂 氏の生涯を、その作品群と共に時代を追って紹介。
門下生、根本圭助による編著と、夫人や弟子たちの証言も交えて綴った一冊。
本書は他の画集と異なり、各絵画作品を大きく載せて鑑賞することではなく、氏の人生における多彩な画業の変遷を
各時代の仕事の説明と600点以上の作品で追うことを主眼にまとめられています。
しかしながら、その筆致は、大きなサイズではなくとも十分に味わうことが出来ます。

戦前の挿絵画家の時代、戦時中の雑誌「機械化」での空想科学兵器（ロケット戦車や、空中航空母艦など）、
終戦直後の暗い時代には、少年たちに夢を与えた少年雑誌の絵物語、巻頭口絵・イラストの戦記もの、ＳＦもの、
プラモデルの誕生とともに手がけたボックスアート(箱絵)で戦艦、戦闘機、戦車、サンダーバード、マイティジャック他
について記述。
映画との関わりでは、円谷英二が自宅に来訪され「地球防衛軍」のメカデザインとストーリーボードを直接依頼されたこと、
以来、「宇宙大戦争」「モスラ」「海底軍艦」「ドゴラ」「ＷＯＯ」他、陰の力にもなったことについても記されています。
（「地球防衛軍」「海底軍艦」他のデザイン画を数点掲載。）
2001年86歳のときに病床にいながらも、ファンに依頼された油絵「富士山上空のB29の編隊飛行」を描き、文字通りの絶筆となった様子まで
正子夫人の言葉をもって記されています。
氏の壮絶に画業に生きた人生を、新たな角度から知ることができる名著です。
