コラージュの面白さを極めた作品。恣意的なところなど何もなく、細部にまでぎっちり美しい悪夢が詰まっている。もちろん、通常の意味で小説ではなく、むしろ画集と呼ぶべき本なのだが、不思議と小説的な感触もある。観る度に発見があり、自分の想像力の限界を押し広げられるような感覚を得ることができる。様々なスタイルを持つエルンストだが、これはひとつの代表作と言えるだろう。

見る小説といわれる本書は文字も含めた様々なイメージのコラージュです。一ページの中で様々なイメージが反発、共鳴し合い、隣のページ、章の中で、そしてこの一冊の中でなんとも言えぬメロディを奏でる。コラージュにたいする一番の理解者であるからこそ生み出せるこの一つ一つの存在感は見る人を無条件に恍惚にさせる。没頭するのではなく、眺める。何度も、何度も眺める。それがたまらない。

個人的に、マックス・エルンストのコラージュ小説の中でも最高傑作と思われる作品。
百頭女、鳥類の長ロプロプ、永遠の父といったキャラクターたちがシュールな世界を駆け巡り、あるいはジュール・ヴェルヌ的な１９世紀SF世界があり、またあるいはマタ・ハリのジュブナイル世界がある。そしてロプロプの怒りによって世界は破滅を迎え、静かに再生する。
すべてが実にエルンストらしく、何度も読み返せる作品。
