初めてこの著者の本を読みましたが、実に文章表現の上手い人です。
シティのビジネスマンとして15年という生活者の目で、イギリス社会の実情を、論理的だけれども平易でわかりやすい文章でつづったエッセイ。

情緒的なイギリス礼賛、またはイギリス批判の本があふれる中、冷静で客観的な視点でイギリス社会の仕組みを分析し、また、日本（人）に対する多少辛口な提言も含め、きちんとその根拠が説得力ある文章で書かれています。

個人主義の国でありながら（あるからこそ？）、著者の言う、弱者にやさしい「フレンドリー・ネットワーク」がしっかりと出来上がっているイギリス社会の仕組み。今後の日本社会にとって大変参考になるものだと思います。
この著者の他の本も読んでみようと思いました。

まあ、いわゆる「イギリス礼賛本」なのだけれども、林望には無い現地採用のサラリーマン経験、井形慶子には無いリアルな体験談、マークス寿子には無い公平な視点、高尾慶子には無い社会的地位、緑ゆうこには無い謙虚さ、林信吾には無い文章力を兼ね備えていて、不思議とそれらの作家に見られる嫌らしさが感じられなかった。まさに、この本の副題の通り、人に優しいイギリス社会の叡智が詰まっている本だと思う。

ただ、基本的に、前述した他の日本人作家たちの本と同じようなことが書いてあるので、目新しい発見は無いに等しい。強いて特徴をあげるならば、ロンドン金融街の人間模様か。

電信柱や無造作に家が並んだグチャグチャな日本の街並みは、木造建築と石造建築の違いや土建会社と政府との利権が関係していると思う。GHQが規制すべきだったと思う。しかし、彼らはヨーロッパ人ではなくてアメリカ人だったので、今日のような日本の街並みになったのだと思う。

日本社会の人間関係の希薄さは、学校や会社の教育が問題だと思う。共同体に所属するものとしての責任を伴わない、間違った意味での個人主義が蔓延していて、元来、ホンネとタテマエ、内と外を分ける民族であり、自分さえ良ければ他人のことなどお構いなしな日本人ばかりなので、イギリス流の他人や弱者に対する思いやりは根付かないと思う。

日本を容易に脱出でき、海外で就職できる環境があれば自殺者は減ると思う。しかし、イギリス人は日本人に比べて、世界共通語である英語を母国語として、ヨーロッパ連合や旧英連邦諸国などの世界各国へ散らばることのできる、恵まれた環境にあり、従って、開かれたイギリスと閉ざされた日本を比べるのには無理があると思う。

著者からのコメントに書いてある、「日本にも、生きることが楽しい国になって欲しい。散歩が楽しい国になって欲しい」というのは、他力本願な感じがして無責任だと思った。

散歩と云うキーワードがにくい。
まさにイギリス人の象徴であるから、スーッと読めた。
豊かな暮らし、見せかけでない文化が詰まった解説書か。
イギリスファンにはたまらない裏事情も書いてあるし、
押さえにはお勧め。
