浅田彰氏の『構造と力』がドゥルーズを紹介した頃、ほとんどの書物は訳されていなかった。程なく上梓されたこの書はそういう意味で、先駆けて独特な概念の訳語を提示した経緯がある。たとえば土地化という訳語は現在ではほとんど領土化と訳されているのだが、土地機械に登記の働きがある以上本書においては、単純に領土とは訳しきれない側面を反映したものとおもわれる。今や同定したかに見える概念の訳語を反省的にとらえる意味でも本書の提示する訳語には、新鮮さがある。文法的に誤まっているというのは恐ろしくデマにすぎないが、語感のムードだけに引き寄せられ、文学作品のように自由な創作的解釈で訳した翻訳を正しいとするお洒落文体家の一部には、いたく不評なようである。日本語としての完成度からいうと、文意を極めて明確に際立たせて整理されており読みやすい。第23回の日本翻訳文化賞受賞が本書に冠せられていないとしても、精密な解釈を背景にした翻訳は、原著の魅力をうまく伝えているといえるだろう。パスカル、イポリットのヘーゲル、サルトルを長年研究してきた翻訳者であるからこそ、流行に流されない、この思想のもたらす真の新しさをうけとめていると考えられる。

訳がひどい。例えば、「連合」や「契約」の意味も持つ alliance をすべて「縁組」と訳しているせいで、ユダヤ教の中心教義としての「神との縁組」なんて表現が出てきて読者を脱力させる。副詞や接続詞の訳し方もしばしばミスリーディングであり、原文の論理を裏切っていることも珍しくない。単語レベルでの誤訳や不適切な訳の数々とも相まって、三読四読しても意味不明の箇所に満ち満ちています。訳者は『現代フランス思想への誘い―アンチ・オイディプスのかなたへ』という本を書いているようですが、訳文を読む限り、はるか手前で右往左往しているだけ。誰かが訳し直さないものだろうか？

訳者が藝術方面に滅法冥い。「ロバート・ギー」を「ロベール・ジー」としてあるのを眼にして読む気が一気に萎えた。まあそんなのはサマツなことで、大筋ちゃんと訳してあればいいのだが、それも適わず。内容も与太話としてはおもしろいが、気合を入れて全部読む必要がある本かどうかはちょっと「？」。
