この本の大きな特徴は、何と言っても、
第一・第二不完全性定理のゲーデルの証明を、
丁寧かつ厳密に紹介しているところであろう。
土台となる論理体系は、高階述語論理である。

特に、理論体系の表現可能性・原始帰納的関数
に関する記述がしっかりしているので、
不完全性定理において、何が本質的なのかが、
読んでいて、把握しやすくなっている。

故・前原昭二先生が、数学基礎論の達人と言われた所以が、
よくわかる名著である。

蛇足：本書と同程度以上に第一・第二不完全性定理を
詳しく紹介している本として、
梅沢敏郎著「記号論理」が挙げられる。
梅沢先生の本での定式化は、本書によるものとは、異なっている。
ただ、残念なことに、梅沢先生のこの本は現在は絶版らしい。

私は基礎論を専門としていないので、この本の本当の価値はわからないかもしれないが、この本を読んで、やっとゲーデルが考えていたことがわかったように思う。著者は優れた基礎論の研究者であるが、この本を書くために周到な準備をして、言葉を選びながら書いている。
基礎論を学んでいる友人から薦められて読んだのだが、基礎論の研究者の中でも評価されている本のようだ。

不完全性定理をゲーデルの原論文に沿いつつも、適宜、初学者向けの解説を挿入するという体裁の本。不完全性定理をしっかり学びたい読者には最適である。間違っても最近出版された文庫本で学び始めようとしないように。
前原氏の名著が復刊されたことを喜びたい。
