幽霊を信じない中学生鬼形の家に真夜中、恐怖新聞が配られる。霊たちの話が聞こえるという同級生の女の子がいうには、一日読むごとに百日ずつ寿命が縮まると。鬼形は見ないようにするが、新聞は雨戸とガラスを突き破っても配られる。鬼形の憑依霊が無理やり読ませるのだ。第一巻は噛み付く女の話と空飛ぶ円盤の話。
初版は昭和４８年で、出てくる女性の服装や髪型が時代を感じさせてなつかしい。つのだじろうの代表作であり、ロングセラーの本である。

子どもながら恐怖新聞がきたらどうしようかと恐れていましたが、実際、自分が新聞は配達の仕事をしたとき、新聞を届けなけれなならない使命感が毎日の自分の行動を制したことを考えると、ポルターガイストの気持ちが分かるのです。

この話、どのようにして集結させるのか興味を持っていました。最終的には除霊を試みるも失敗し、鬼形礼は死んでしまうのですが、その恐怖新聞の配達は彼に引き継がれることとなります。
こんな終わり方に「はたして彼に新聞を届け続けることができるのだろうか？」と疑問に思いましたが、その後のつのだじろうの恐怖物の先駆けとして興味深い作品です。

「亡霊学級」も同時に読むとよいのではないでしょうか。
