非常に深みのあるフィクションを交えた第2次世界大戦記。時代を背負う一級の小説に勝るとも劣らない漫画芸術の最高傑作の一つだと思います。

手塚さんはその著書で自身の戦争体験（＝反戦・平和への願い）を何としても後世に残す為に本書を書いたと仰っていましたが、文学・音楽・医学等に精通した日本が世界に誇る漫画芸術家の気迫（鬼気迫る想い）が随所に感じられます。そして、史実をベースに現在のイスラエル問題へも通じる緻密かつ人間の宿業を絡ませたオリジナルストーリーは圧巻です。

20数年前の中学生時代に当時の親友が、｢手塚治虫の凄い漫画がある｣と紹介してくれて以来、漸く読む機会に恵まれました。ぜひ、多くの方に拝読頂き、日本の過去の歴史を振り返り、2度と戦争を起さないように子孫へ語りついで頂きたいと思います。

4.0 out of 5 stars この作品を受け入れる場があった時代に敬意を表します, 2009/7/5
立場も生い立ちも違う人々が、それぞれの正義に従って行動し
時代、あるいは世界の流れに従って結末を迎える群像劇ですが
登場人物たちが安易な正義観やヒューマニズムに日和らずに
最後までそれぞれの主義主張を貫き通した点が
この作品が群像劇として名作たる所以です。

人気や上からの意向に左右されず、作者の意志が生のまま叩き込まれた作品を
商業作品として発表する場があった時代、なんとも羨ましい限りです。

ただ、ナチスとヒトラーの抱いていた正義があまり掘り下げられていないので
彼らを賛美するつもりはありませんが、教科書どおりの悪役といった感じの
中立的な視点とはいえないステレオタイプな描写になってしまっている点が
残念です。

もちろんこれはマンガです。

文庫版だと全4冊あるのだが、読み始めたら一晩かけて読み切ってしまった。

大まかなあらすじとしては、ナチスドイツの時代から戦後にかけて、アドルフ・カウフマン、アドルフ・カミル、アドルフ・ヒトラーという同じアドルフというファーストネームを持つ３人の人生を描いたもの。

物語は『ヒトラーはユダヤである』という極秘情報（フィクション）をめぐり、ナチスドイツや共産主義者、工作員、日本の特高、そして図らずも事件に巻き込まれていく人々、といった様々な人物たちの思惑と人間模様が絡んで進んでいく。

あまり、ネタばれはしないが、この作品のテーマはなんだろう。戦中期の歴史ものとしてはあまりにもフィクション性が高いし、ハッピーエンドとは程遠い。

そうなるとキーワードは「正義って何だ」といったところか。登場人物たちはそれぞれが信じる正義のもとに行動し、憎しみ合い、最終的には殺しあった。そして、そんなことがいつになっても続いている。それならば今あなたが持っているその正義ってなに？その意味を考えたことある？そう手塚は訴えているように思える。

逆に同じ歴史を繰り返す人間へのニヒリズムを読み取ることができるかもしれない。どちらかというと読んだ直後はこっちに走りやすいかな。

まーそれは人それぞれ。

いずれにせよ、こんなマンガを晩年に描いてしまう手塚治は偉大です。
