自意識過剰、神経過敏な現代人が、
ちょっと踏み外すと、
ここに出てくる「患者」になってしまう。

思わず読んでいて「自分を気をつけなきゃ」
と思わせるような、ちょっとした現代人の心の狂いを、
おもしろおかしく指摘してくれます。

ぜひ現代人のみなさんに読んでほしい。
この本を読めば、
自分の心の病が重病になる前に気づけるかも。

　まさに「患者さん、いらっしゃーい！」の世界だ。本書は、第2弾『空中ブランコ』で第131回直木賞を受賞した奥田氏の「伊良部シリーズ」の第1弾。順序を逆にして読んだせいか、こころなしか伊良部一郎神経科医の奇形な言動ぶりにはまだ「抑制」が効いているような印象である。それにしても、本書で扱われている神経的・精神的症状に悩んでいる人は多いのか、「なるほど、そういう症状もありそうだ」と思えるものばかりであった。

　精神科医は患者の症状を丹念に聴きそれに応じた処置を講じるのであろうが、この伊良部医師はカウンセリングを全く信用しておらず、患者には想像もつかないきわめて大胆な治療法を自ら実践してゆく。そこに「迷い」や「躊躇」の念は皆無である。「伊良部の精神科医も天職だ。人を深刻にさせない天性のキャラクターだから」（278頁）という文章にはまったく同意する。この医師と付き合っているうちに、自分が抱え込んでいると思っている症状や悩みそれ自体が、もしかしたら「馬鹿らしい」とみなせるようになるかもしれない。それを伊良部医師が「計算」しているとはとても思えないのだが。

　さて本書も第2弾と同様に計5作品が所収され、多様な症状をもった患者が「地下1階」の神経科を訪問する。総合病院であり外装はそこそこ綺麗なのだから、本来は患者でごった返す状況が予想できるはずだが、この神経科を訪問する患者数はきわめて少ないようだ。訪問患者もあらかじめ選抜されているかもしれない。伊良部医師と対等に付き合うだけのエネルギーと覚悟が要求されているように思うからだ。ここを訪問した時点で症状はすでに治っているんだろうか。本書では伊良部一郎医師の素性や性格が克明に描かれており、かえって「逆読み」効果によって彼により多くの親近感を抱くことができた。伊良部医師を生み出した奥田英朗氏の作家という仕事もおそらくは天職なのだろう。注目の1冊である。

まさに怪作である。
この作品は、すごく好きな人と、全く受け付けない人の二通りにわかれるとおもうが、
私にとっては「ハマッタ」作品である。
とにかく、主人公の精神科医・伊良部のキャラクターがよい。
ひたすら笑わせる小説でありながら、泣かせる（？）ツボをおさえている。
作者の代表作「最悪」「邪魔」とは、全く違った路線の作品でありながら、文章展開のうまさは両群の作品に通じるものであり、本作品ではあらためて作者の才能を痛感させられた。

この作品では惜しくも受賞は逃したが、続編の「空中ブランコ」で見事直木賞を獲得した。
