９６年１月『Shallweダンス？』を初日に見た。喜劇の体裁は持っているが、内容はしっかり人生の応援歌になっていて、私は密かにこの作品にその年５０作ほど見た映画の中で名誉ある監督賞を進呈したものだ。ところが、翌年この作品は日本アカデミー賞のほとんどを独占してしまう。それは無いだろうというのが私のいつわざる感情で、やがてこの作品がアメリカでも評判をとっているらしいという噂は聞いていたが無視していた。本も出ていたが、また儲けやがって、などと思っていた。ところがである。文庫版が出たということで読み始めるとこれが単なるアメリカ旅行記ではなかった。ミラ・マックスの短縮バージョンとの激しいやり取りはそのままこの作品の詳しい解説になっていて私の作品鑑賞がいかに底の浅いものであったかということを思い知らされたし、アメリカの配給会社の仕組みを知る上でおそらく日本で初めての紹介文章になっている。カメラとビデオを持ち歩きながらアメリカ中を監督はキャンペーンして回るのだが、そこで明らかにされるアメリカ人の日本の理解の仕方、生の生活の匂い、これは優れて詳しい文字で書かれたアメリカ地方都市のドキュメンタリーになっている。私は知らなかったが、この作品がいくつ賞をとろうと、儲けようと周防監督の元には一円も入らない仕組みになっていたらしい。長い間誤解をしていた恋人のように今はまた彼のファンになっている。この本が沢山売れて彼の元に沢山印税が入り、次の作品が出来るだけ早くできることを祈ろう!!

映画『Shall we ダンス?』をアメリカで公開するにあたって、彼の地でプロモーションを行った、その顛末記。紀行とも、比較文化論とも、日本映画界への叱咤激励ともとれる内容です。分厚いですが、長さはそんなに気になりませんでした。

アメリカ人は「監督としての成功＝ハリウッド進出」と信じ込んでおり、ハリウッドには興味がないそぶりをすると、それは負け犬の遠吠えとしか受け取られない。上映先では何度もアカデミー賞最優秀外国語映画賞の太鼓判を押されるも、日本での配給会社の力関係ゆえか、『Shall we ダンス?』にはノミネート資格がなかった。日系人に、日本語がたどたどしいとか、本当の日本はこうじゃないと言われた……等々、愚痴や恨み節などがあけすけに、かつしつこく書かれており、このしつこさこそ、良質のコメディをつくる原動力なのだと感心しました。三谷さんもしつこいですもんね。大上段に構えず、ひたすら愚痴るところに好感が持てます。

私の場合、図らずも映画『Shall we ダンス?』を見る前に読んでしまい、映画を見る時には既にあらすじを知っていたのですが、そのことで面白さが半減するどころか、逆に監督のこだわった細かいディテールまで十分に楽しんで観ることができました。既に映画をご覧になっている方も、読後に映画を再見すると、新たな面白さが発見できるのではないでしょうか。

ところで、大味の料理が多いアメリカですが、ヒューストンの「パパスブロス」のステーキと、カンザスシティの「アメリカン・レストラン」のアスパラガス・ナポレオン、ヒューストンの「リッツ・カールトン・ホテル」のトルティーヤスープはいけるそうです。周防監督は愛すべき食いしん坊のようです。

シナリオに似た紀行文である。
ディテールなど事細かに書いているのだが、映画のようにそれらを一度に示す文章があれば、読みやすかった。
途中であきてしまった。
