テレビドラマやエッセイ、短編小説を通じて向田ファンになった人にとって、ページをめくるごとに驚きや発見のある本だと思います。作品から推察できるとおりの発言がある一方、かなり言いたい放題の部分もあります。阿川弘之との対談で披露している＜ひじきの二度めし＞の話を読んだときは、思わずのけぞりました。脚本家の倉本聡のことを「倉本ちゃん」と言っている箇所では、やはり向田さんも業界人なのだと、軽いショックを受けました。それぞれに読み応えがありますが、特に面白かったのは、小田島雄志と女優の品定めをするくだりや、吉行淳之介と数字や宇宙について話すくだりでした。ほかの対談相手は、小野田勇、水上勉、山藤章二、竹脇無我、澤地久枝などです。

大御所も親方も二枚目も、邦子姉御を前にして、まずはちょっと居ずまいを正したのであろうなあ、と思いを馳せる。
あの、「はっし」としたまっすぐな視線を前にして。
それでいて、加減良く話はほぐれていき、いい時間を過ごした満足を一緒に感じる。
どなたもこなたも、「俺んときが一番盛り上がった」と内心ほくそえんでいたのではないだろうか。

姉御の魅力だ。

唯一女性の澤地さんを相手にした回がちょうど真ん中にあって、ここは気楽な女のお喋り。
大輪の花２本が笑いさざめいているのを、居ずまいを正した殿がたが囲んでいるようで、なかなか粋な配置でした。

向田邦子の言葉のリズム、上品な庶民性、愛らしい牙、ズケリとした女らしさ。対談した男たちが押し並べて口にするのは彼女の美しさであるが、それは見た目の印象も当然あるにせよ、彼女の持つ知性とユーモアと優しさに裏付けられたものでは無かったか。そう、彼女の言葉はどれほど辛辣に言ってのけても、優しく女らしいのである。
