投資信託の起源や普及の歴史、ファンドマネージャの素顔など、投資信託とは何ぞやというごくごく基本的なことをカバーしている。確かに「投資信託を買う前に」読むべき本ではあるが（買った後にこの本を読んでいるようではまずいのでは）、この本を読んだからといって自分自身がどう投資信託と向き合うかという答えが得られるわけではない。一般的な方針すらも得られない。どうしても雑学としての投資信託を広く浅く知っておくための本という感じがしてしまう。

いかにも週刊誌の連載記事を加筆して編集したような内容だが、
投資信託がどんなもんだかを知るにはお手軽な一冊です。
ただ、内容がやや陳腐化し始めており、"パッシブ運用"やら
"グロース株"の言葉の使い方もあやしいのが難点か。
学者や専門家の書いた入門書とは一味違っているので、
それはそれで多角的な観点から眺めるという意味では有益です。

　筆者は、日経新聞を経て独立したジャーナリストとのことである。
　第１章では、禁じ手である投信の回転売買の被害に遭った老人の例とか外国ファンドで損をした例とか週刊紙的話題が書かれている。（この時点ではユーロ系投信で大損していたＴ氏は証券会社に文句を言いつつも、ずっと持っていれば現時点ではかなり儲かっているはずであろうがどうなったのであろうか？）
　２章、４章では、投信の歴史、英国、米国での発展についての解説がなされており米国での現状解説は有用であった。
　全体としては投資信託について知識がない人が一定の知識を得るためには有用ではあるが、可もなく不可もなくという感じもしないでもない。
　投資信託は第４次ブームであるとのことであるが、第３の金融商品として有効に使うべきとの最終章の主張から書き始めたほうがすっきりした構成になってのではないか。
　ある意味優等生的な構成であり、いろいろと気配りした結果、主張が強く出ていない点で損をしているような気がする。
