1年前の6月23日の夜明け前，私の目の前で友人は同級生の男子生徒からナイフで刺され亡くなった。葬式では泣いていた友人達も時の経過と共に彼女の話題が少なくなり，私は罪の意識にさいなまれていた。そして，今日友人の命日に亡くなった場所で，左膝をつき右手を頭上に掲げ，自分の胸に持って行き，左手を地面すれすれにおろし右手に重ねる青年に出逢う･･･

第140回直木賞受賞作品。人の死と人の生の両端にあるものを，悼む人（主人公：坂築静人）を中心とした3人の視線から描いていく物語である。読む人によって色々な感想を抱くと思うが，私は人として，そして人の親として涙無しでは読めない作品であり，最近の本の中では最高の物語の一つであったと感じた。読み終えたあとは爽やかな気持ちになるものの，自分そして他人の存在がいままでと違うものとなり，心に大きな重いものを残してくれる物語であった。

何より静人の母、巡子の末期がんの闘病の様子に非常に心打たれました。
ラスト近くでの巡子の言葉1つ1つの重さや、壮絶な闘病の描写は著者の筆力の賜物ですが、そこに子を宿した娘：美汐の出産への道のりが交差することで、｢生命｣の存在がより鮮烈なものとなり、読者により深く考えさせる結果となったと思います。
また、巡子の夫：慶彦の最後の方での言葉、行動は、涙を誘います。

この小説の主要人物である静人に関しては、正直な所、いまだにどう解釈すればいいのかわかりません。そのため前半は特に、ページをめくる手が進みませんでした(決して著者の筆力がないわけではありません。むしろ無駄のない文章を書いている印象があります)。
しかし巡子のくだりがラストに来ていたことと、巡子の静人への思いが伝わってきたのもあり、｢生｣と｢死｣、そして人と人の繋がりについて、自分なりに考えるきっかけとなりました。読了した今、心にいい重みが残っています。

自殺する代わりに他人の死を悼む。
自分にはとうてい出来ないことだ。
そのために行脚に似た行動も出来そうにない。
自己犠牲の究極なのかもしれないけれども、どう考えても信じられないし、現実味がない。
でも、そう信じさせる文章力は恐ろしいものだ。
