題名を見て、死んだと思っていた人に逢いにわかに子供の頃の世界に連れ戻された想いがした。恋愛話一辺倒と見られる中で、かつては人の心に合った思い遣りや愛情をほのかに懐かしませる作品。私の子供の頃の河口付近の葦の茂みには河童が出るといわれ、夕刻にはおぼろげな得体の知れない影が出るので近づくことを止められていた。一地方都市の懐かしい詩情を感じさせてくれる。話題になっているAllwaysにはない自然がいい感じである。

「てれんぱれん」とは、何となくぶらぶらしていて、怠けている人を避難するときに使う言葉だそうです。
　主人公の父は母に「てれんぱれんしとらんと」と叱り飛ばされるような頼りない人だったのですが、原爆の後遺症を心身共にかかえている人で、『けれんぱれんさん』と呼んでいる霊を見ることのできる人だったのです。

　自分の人生が災い転じて福となすというようなものだったと述懐する主人公ですが、父と二人だけの秘密をずうっとかかえていて、小学生の頃住んでいた土地に戻ってくると、「ニラ焼き屋のよっちゃん」と主人公を呼ぶ老婦人に出会い……、

と、あらすじを辿ってみても、なかなか一言ではいいつくせなく、複雑に物語が絡み合っています。最後は、無力なようでいて、希望が見える展開なのですが……。あまりにも静かすぎる気がしました。

　にら焼き屋を営む働き者のお母さんと、てれんぱれんのお父さんと過ごした町に４０年ぶりにもどってきた主人公は、昔の知り合いだという女性に声をかけられる。子供のころの父との秘密「てれんぱれんさん」に関わることをできるだけ避けてきた彼女は、その女性に対し、胸騒ぎを覚え憂鬱になってしまうが、その女性に関わることで、父の思わぬ秘密と思いを知ることになる。
　なぜ、父がてれんぱれんだったのか、女性の明かした話と、逆らうこともせず黙って消えていく「てれんぱれんさん」への主人公の叫びに、思わずほろっとさせられました。長崎のあちこちには「てれんぱれんさん」の影がたくさんあるのかもって思わせられました。
