クリスティー,アガサ
1890年、保養地として有名なイギリスのデヴォン州トーキーに生まれる。中産階級の家庭に育つが、のちに一家の経済状況は悪化してしまい、やがてお金のかからない読書に熱中するようになる。特にコナン・ドイルのシャーロック・ホームズものを読んでミステリに夢中になる。1914年に24歳でイギリス航空隊のアーチボルド・クリスティーと結婚し、1920年には長篇『スタイルズ荘の怪事件』で作家デビュー。1926年には謎の失踪を遂げる。様々な臆測が飛び交うが、10日後に発見された。1928年にアーチボルドと離婚し、1930年に考古学者のマックス・マローワンに出会い、嵐のようなロマンスののち結婚した。1976年に亡くなるまで、長篇、短篇、戯曲など、その作品群は100以上にのぼる。現在も全世界の読者に愛読されており、その功績をたたえて大英帝国勲章が授与されている

とても面白いし、いい作品だと思います。
でも翻訳がひどすぎる…！たぶんクリスティの和訳作品では最悪ではないでしょうか。
若いハンサムな青年が「〜ってわけにゃいかない」「えらいこった、云々」
押し出しも立派な大尉さんが人前で「しまった、〜しちゃった」
高級リゾート地に来ているレディが「脳天をぶち割られるところでしたの」
警官は上から下まで全員江戸下町の岡っ引き口調。
ポアロに関してはまるで別人です。事実ポアロだと思わずに読みました。
登場人物のキャラクターや身分を全く考えない無茶苦茶な翻訳で、いつものクリスティの気品と含蓄ある文章を楽しむことが全くできませんでした。
犯人探しだけを楽しむ読み方なら気にならないかもしれませんが、クリスティファンとしては一日も早く新訳で読みたいと思います。

題名は聖書からの引用の由。一般に作者は題名を付けるのに苦労すると聞くが、その点欧米の作家は楽をしている。本作はクリスティにしては珍しく正統的(?)なトリックを用いた本格ミステリ。日本では「地中海殺人事件」の名で映画公開されている。これらの状況は「ナイルに死す」と酷似している。冒頭でポアロが解決に結びつく独り言をつぶやくのだが、この時点でそれを予知するのは無理だろう。トリックは良く考えてあるのだが、それ故分かる人には分かってしまうという本格ミステリが抱える矛盾が本作にもある。ちなみに、本作のメイン・トリックは「ビッグ・ボウの殺人」のトリックに捻りを加えたもの。しかし、クリスティがこれだけ上質のミステリをプレゼントしてくれたんだもの、読者は楽しんで読まなきゃ。
