A Kid's Review
イシグロの最新作｢わたしを離さないで｣に感動し、彼の長編をさかのぼって読んでゆき、たどり着いたのが、処女作｢遠い山なみの光」でした。翻訳ものとは思えない読みやすさ。魅力的な登場人物たちは、私の心に入り込んで、その続編を想像させずにはおかない。何より驚いたのは、２０代の男性が女心をここまで書けるのかということ。会話の言葉遣いに関しては、違和感を持ったことがここのレビューに書かれてありましたが、別のサイトにも同様のことがあり、主人公の娘景子と同世代の私にとっては、逆にそれは思いがけないことでした。｢昭和は遠くなりにけり」なのかもしれません。何はともあれ、日本では埋もれているこの作品を、多くの人に読んでもらいたいし、出来たら映画化して欲しいと思います。

5.0 out of 5 stars 「引き」の文章の美しさが堪能できる本, 2004/8/22
　この小説はメイン舞台が日本であり、日本女性の手記という形であり、その主人公は自分のことを「わたし」と第１人称でよぶ。この形式だけみると、いわゆる私小説じゃないかと思いたくもなるが、この本は違う。

　まず、主人公の感情が直接記載されていることはほとんどなく、スローモーションのような外界の描写がさらさらと淡白に描かれている。その文章の中に、激しい情念や絶望、儚い希望にしがみつく人々が息づいている。

　戦後日本の国民的精神の揺れ、移り行く価値観に戸惑う人々、何とか人間らしく生きていこうとする人々を、遠い国から祖国に想いをはせ、美しく描き出だすことに成功している。

カズオ・イシグロを読むならまず「The Remains of the Day」から入ることをお勧めします。この作品は３つ目か４つ目に読むのが良いのではないでしょうか。日本人でありながら英国に幼い頃から暮らし、世界的な英文学作家となった彼の最初の小説が、戦後長崎に暮らす一人のご婦人のある面もの苦しいお話だったということに、きっと作品以外のところから、イシグロ文学全体に対しての感慨が生まれることと思います（こういう感慨は日本人にしか持てないものですからね）。

文章、話の展開、登場人物のキャラクターにイシグロ・ワールドの全ての原型が詰まっています。おそらくその頃あなたは既にイシグロファンになっているでしょうから、重苦しい部分がほとんどであるこの作品もワクワクしながら読めるはずです。細部の描写も見事。「きっとイシグロさんは取材の為に長崎に行ったんだろうなあ」とバカみたいに思ってしまいました。
