　フランシスの小説をここまで読んできていくつかの特徴に気づいたのだが、本書はそうした特徴を裏付ける典型的作品であった。

　まず第一にのっけから読者をストーリーに引きずり込んでしまうショッキングで否も応もない出だし。この作品では主人公が銃撃を受けた直後の入院シーンで物語が始まる。おかげで主人公に最初から負わせられたハンディキャップ……銃撃を受けて引き裂かれた腹の痛み……に読者はずっと付き合わされることになる。中でも固形物が食せないためにビーフ・ジュースなる、ぼくに は想像もつかないしろものを四六時中飲んでいるシーンは、痛々しいことこの上ない。

　そして第二の特徴は主人公が地獄に落ちるような苦痛を舐めるという点である。受ける苦痛でもこれまでの作品を見ると肉体的なものと精神的なものと二種類があったが、本書での肉体的な苦痛の高さはおそらくシリーズ中でも屈指なのではないか。肉体的な苦痛を避ければ精神的苦痛との二者択一に出くわさねばならないという過酷な設定。試練はどこまでも試練でしかない。

　そして第三の特徴は徹底した悪人どもと、そのエゴイズムの凄まじさ。どちらかといえば、主人公の側と同列とはとても言えないやる気を見せてくれる悪党どもの積極的な動きがある。主人公シッド・ハレーは騎手での落馬経験以来、抜け殻同然にその過去の名前だけを探偵社に預けていたため、本質的には素人探偵という設定。その上肉体的なハンディキャップが追い撃ちをかけるし、その上、敵は複数。自分は独り。読者側から見たらこれほど不利な勝負はないのである。そうしたハンディキャップ・マッチを如何に闘うのか。これこそが本書の見所であり、シッド・ハレーの不屈さの見せどころであろう。

　そして上述のことに自然と繋がってゆくのだが、第四の特徴はアメリカ小説にはなかなか見られない、英国冒険小説伝統の「名誉」という生き方の中心的概念。騎士道精神と言い換えてもいいのだろう。これある故に、主人公らは常に内的葛藤を闘わねばならないし、自己破壊を免れるためにストイックであらねばならない。

　第五の特徴は、まさにこれを一人称でストイックに記述している文体の技術である。自分に都合のいいことはおよそ一言も言わないその文体に接すると、自然主人公の語らないほうの側面にだけぼくは眼を向けてしまう。また、それがフランシス作品の正当な読み方であるように、ぼくは思ってしまうわけである。

　推理小説というものは、犯人がわかれば、何回も同じ本を読み返す類のものではない、というのが常識であるが、ディック・フランシスの競馬シリーズ、その中でもシッド・ハレーものは再読、再々読に値する。このシリーズでは、探偵役を演じる主人公は、登場が原則として、１回きりである。にも拘らず、シッド・ハレーはこの「大穴」に初登場してから、2007年初頭までに計４回我々読者の前に現れる。フランシス自身が、シッドという個性に惚れ込んでいるのだろう。「大穴」は、シッド・ハレー初登場ということで、とても重要な一冊！　それにしても、この本を読んで感じ入るのは、英国上流社会のいやらしさであり、彼らによる弱者いじめの陰険さである。そして、それにストイックに耐えるシッドの勇気に我々は、拍手を送るのだ。

　英国のスパイ小説や冒険小説は昔から私の大のお気に入りであった。しかし、ディック・フランシスの作品だけはその評判にも拘わらず、たぶん競馬に対するアレルギーからか手に取ることはなかった。最近の新聞書評に菊池光氏の独特な翻訳も然ることながら読み始めたら止まらなくなってしまったと書いてあるのが目に止まり、ようやく本書を読んでみたのである。
　何と深みのあるプロット、大人の雰囲気、そして洒落た構成であろうか。何と上質で、センスがあり、また品格を感じさせる翻訳であろうか。文字通り一気に読まされてしまった。読書好きにとって金鉱を掘り当てたようなこの気持ち、わかっていただけるだろうか。
　1970年代に初版が出ているので、そばにありながら30年間もフランシスの素晴らしい作品群に触れていなかったことになる。大変遅くなったが、これからこの30年間を取り戻そうと思う。競馬の世界にも興味が湧いてきた。
